The Akamas Peninsula is located in the western angle of Cyprus in Paphos and is considered as one of the most popular places to visit. The name Akamas originates from an Athenian warrior, the son of Theseus who came to the peninsula after the Trojan war.

Akamas is one of Paphos’ most picturesque regions, and is home to endemic plants and animals such as monk seals and sea turtles. Some of the more untouched beauty here can only be reached off road, so it’s best to rent a 4×4 or a quad bike to traverse the region safely. In the summer months, the temperatures can get very high, and if you’re doing one of the area’s many nature trails, a bottle of water is essential to keep you hydrated.

The Akamas peninsula, so named after an Athenian nobleman, son of Theseus, who arrived here after the Trojan War, is a place of unusual natural beauty, famed for the ecodiversity of its habitat and the variety of geological formations found here – from narrow gorges to deep mysterious caves, from precipitous cliffs to islets swathed in sea mist. According to legend, after swimming in the crystalline waters of the bay, goddess Aphrodite would scale the hillside and bathe in a pool fed by a mountain spring that cascades down the sides of a grotto overhung by a leafy fig tree. This spot has come to be called the Baths of Aphrodite, and here Adonis, hunting in the Akamas forest, first saw and fell in love with the goddess.

See the wild west coast park with glorious seascapes and cyrpiot fana and flora. Especially pretty in Spring when the wild flowers enhance the scenery. Great walks and hiking trails. Trek up to the fire station and great views of the north and west coast. Visit Lara Bay and see the turtle nests on a glorious sandy beach. Organised trips when turtles expected to hatch and head out to sea. Super sunsets.
