The Devil’s Porridge Museum commemorates HM Factory Gretna, the largest munitions factory in the world during the First World War and explores the stories of the Solway Military Coast during the Second World War and beyond. The museum uses artefacts, information panels, film and audio, photographs and oral histories to bring the fascinating history of this Border area to life! The Museum has been grown by the local community over the past 20 years; from a small exhibition in St John’s Church and via a large uninsulated industrial shed in Eastriggs to the fantastic modern interactive museum it is today. Our dedicated team of staff and knowledgeable volunteers have played a vital role in helping to build this wonderful museum which ensures that the story of HM Factory Gretna can be told for years to come.

Annan Rd, Eastriggs DG12 6TF (15mins - 9miles) The Devil’s Porridge Museum tells the story of HM Factory Gretna, the greatest munitions factory on earth in World War One, where the devil’s porridge (or cordite, an explosive) was mixed. There were 30,000 workers: 12,000 of them were women. Their contribution to the war effort helped women to achieve the vote.

We have visited this museum several times with our son Joe, its well worth a visit and has a little coffee at the end. Lots of interactive learning and ran by volunteers, just on the outskirts of Eastriggs.
