Boolboonda Tunnel is the longest unsupported road tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere. Built in 1884, now also home to hundreds of small bent wing bats. Nearby Mt Perry besides its pretty setting is a historic gold and copper mining town and its hey day had a population of approx. 3,000. Now much quieter, but great dining at the two hotels, and the lookout is an easy drive to the top for a beautiful view of the township and area.

Scenic Drive - Boolboonda Tunnel, Mt Perry The best way to discover our region is to take a road trip and a scenic drive to Boolboonda Tunnel Mount Perry is a perfect place to start. Boolboonda Tunnel extends 192m into rock, is unlined and unsupported. It is known as the longest unsupported tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere! It was originally built in 1883 for the railway line between Bundaberg and Mount Perry but is now home to a colony of bent-winged bats and used to access residential properties. Just before you reach the tunnel is a large tree located on the left. It is customary for tunnel visitors to carve their name into the tree. Kids love to climb and play all over this tree. There is a nice picnic table located under the tree, the perfect spot for a rest while the kids play. To get there: The tunnel is easy to find with plenty of signage. Turn off the Bruce Highway head along Mt Perry Road until you reach the Boolboonda Tunnel sign. The tunnel is then located about 1km in from the turn off not long after you hit the dirt road. While you are out that way why not carry continue your drive to Mount Perry. Nestled within the Boolboonda and Normanby Ranges, Mount Perry only another 20 minutes down the road. It is a quaint little town with a great look out.
