The beach has a long coastline and can be accessed from many walkways along Marine Parade on a clear day you can see the Kaikoura Mountains. Central New Brighton Beach is often a hive of activity with surfers trying to catch a wave in all weather, surf life-saving training, fishing off the wharf, people walking their dogs and a busy children's playground plus lots more. For a quieter time there are many spots along Marine Parade where you can access the beach for a quieter stroll. You can see an amazing Sun rise from the Pacific Ocean if you are up early enough.

The pier was officially opened on 1 November 1997, on the site of the original New Brighton Pier which had been demolished more than 30 years previously. It is the biggest ocean pier in Australasia. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the opening of the New Brighton Pier on 21 June 2007 the structure became a permanently lit icon of the city’s coast. LED lights along the underside of the pier were switched on, bathing the pillars the length of the pier in a combination of red, green and blue lights. This effectively lights all the columns and the sides of the pier structure creating a dramatic display of colour which is also reflected in the water. The Burwood-Pegasus Community Board commissioned lighting expert Grant Robertson to create the work.

Sandy Beach, a little windy sometimes which is great for cooling off on a hot day. You will often find large kite days held here. I recommend a walk along the pier - a great place for sight-seeing, walking, and fishing. Get into the ocean here and cleanse your aura, or just cool off from the summer heat. A beautiful local spot. I'd like to say unique, but NZ is nothing but coastline! Each piece different, but all beautiful - from one end of the country to the other! Love Kim xxx
