The atmospheric abbey towers over Whitby's cobbled streets, beach and harbour. Whitby is split by the river Esk. The abbey sits on the East Cliff, and was the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula and central to the annual Whitby Goth Festival. The town itself has many activities and events throughout the year, including the famous Whitby ghost tours and open-top bus rides. There are museums and indoor galleries and lots of shops if the weather isn't great. There are lots of options for eating and drinking, from high-end dining, to casual eating and cafes. There are great places to sample fish and chips in Whitby, and people travel from all over the region and further afield to sample this seaside treat. There's something for everyone in Whitby.

A lovely traditional but historic seaside resort. A visit to The Abbey is a must. Great eating out.

Whitby is an absolute must. Visit the beautiful gothic town with it's nicky knacky shops, it's ruined abbey and the 199 steps it takes to climb up to it. See the river where the whaling fleet was based. Stand by the whalebone arch and imagine Bram Stoker looking down at the beach and developing the idea that eventually became Dracula. It's really lovely.
