You can still currently enjoy a very interesting walk around the old station and on through the historic tunnels and down to the old signal stations. The walk offers some quite spectacular views including that of an old sandstone railway bridge.

The Zig Zag is a full size, narrow gauge tourist railway located at Clarence, ten km east of Lithgow in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. Built in the 1860s, the line was constructed to transport people and produce from the western plains of NSW to Sydney. It was replaced in 1910 by a 10 tunnel deviation. The trains, track and rollingstock are maintained and operated by the Zig Zag Railway Co-op Ltd, a voluntary, “not for profit’ co-operative. The Zig Zag Railway can be reached by road or by CityRail train. The Zig Zag Railway ran steam trains and rail motors between 1975 and 2012.

OK so this closed over lockdowns for restoration, reopening mid 2022. but I have to write about it now because I cant wait for it to open. Real rides in real steam trains run by real train enthusiasts, for anyone who loves engines and big noises and the ingenuity of engineering, young or old

When climbing up and down a mountain, railways have 2 options, either go around the mountain in a spiral or take a zig zag path. While sitting in the antique carriages, enjoy the lovely scenery. At the stations, children will love watching the locomotive race past from one end to the other to pull the train. When we visited it had the Harry Potter theme. The themes keep changing. A popular one is Thomas the Tank Engine. Take an esky and rug to hop off at scenic picnic spots. Stretch your legs and enjoy some sports, then hop back on the train when it comes around next time.
