The iconic harbour is well worth a look. Porthcawl was once the largest exporter of coal in the world with a huge harbour. It's only about a third as big now but has two lighthouses. Huge waves crash over it in winter and it's regularly featured on weather reports whenever big storms lash the UK coast. During the summer months there's a weekly free fireworks display put on by the Hi-Tide every Tuesday night.

Infamous for the huge waves photographed crashing against it. Porthcawl Lighthouse is a hexagonal cast-iron tower at the south-east end of the breakwater. Built in 1866, it was the last coal and gas-powered lighthouse in the UK. It is well worth a walk along the pier to look at views of the sea, Porthcawl and Ogmore across the water. Its also a popular spot for fishing and crab fishing.
