Karteros is a seaside tourist settlement at the foot of the Mesovouni or Paliochora hill of the Hersonissos. From the newer monuments stand the church of Saint Nicholas, which is built in a large cave and St. John the Baptist in the village of Karteros. There is also the Heraklion Equestrian Club. In Mesa Karteros, the canyon of Karteros river ends from Skalani and the hiking route is relatively easy (more info on the relevant page of "Karteros Gorge"). The beach is ideal for windsurfing and well organized with sun loungers, umbrellas, lifeguards, cafes and restaurants that cater to the needs of the visitors. Opposite the beach there is a small island, the Monocharakos where the visitor can go either by swim or by a sea bike from Amnissos.

The Bay of Karteros is located at the exit of the homonym Gorge Karteros, 7km east of Heraklion and extends to the east for 3.5km. It is named after the Byzantine General, Krateros, who in 824AC landed on the beach with his ships in order to liberate Crete from the Saracens, but was defeated. On the long bay, there are two settlements, Karteros and Amnissos. The area has developed so much that the two villages are now merged. The main reason for the rapid development of the area is the small distance from Heraklion and the beautiful beachfront with the fine golden sand.
