They have a daily train that takes you from the Redwoods to the Sea and stops right at the Santa Cruz Beach and Boardwalk. It will drop you off and you can return later that day via the train back to the Redwoods. They also have evening dinner trips and activities such as Civil War reenactments. The is great for families and very close.
