Shopping

If you are into shopping, skip the MoA and try the Midtown Market on Lake Street. It keeps getting better with interesting shops, an ethnic food court, and a brewery. Get on bus 21 (five minutes from the house) to get there, or ride one of the shared bikes.

Parks & Nature

Como Regional Park is also a healthy walk or short bike ride from our house. Perhaps it is best known for the zoo and conservatory, but it has much more to offer: Music, athletic fields, swimming pool, amusement park, golf course… Look it up online.

Arts & Culture

In some ways, the Ramsey County Courthouse in downtown Saint Paul is even more impressive than the State Capital! The building is known for American Art Deco “Skyscraper Style” architecture. The history of how this building came to be and viewing the priceless wood species used inside makes a formal tour well worthwhile. You must schedule the tour, though and try to get a tour when you can enter the law library. Search online for “Ramsey County Courthouse” and select the website that ends in “.us”. Scroll down to see the tour information.

Entertainment & Activities

A healthy walk or short bike ride from our house, the Minnesota State Fair is perhaps the finest State Fair in the United States. The fairgrounds are beautified with large, mature trees. Excellent planning assures that the attractions are diverse and updated every year. With excellent participation from folks all over Minnesota, good feelings abound. One of our favorite stops is the Fine Arts Building. Many other activities happen at the fairgrounds. Look it up online.

Food Scene

Fasika's has been a solid choice for Ethiopian cuisine in the Twin Cities. Sometimes, Marge and I split the vegetarian sampler (~$15) and end up bringing hone leftovers.

The place is known for their tasty food, not the buildings architectural design or interior decor, which is lacking. Their food wins awards and brings repeat customers in from quite a distance.

Always great food and service. They get very busy, though. A backup plan would be to cross the street and begin eating within minutes at Whole Foods, which lacks ambiance, but has a very large selections of tasty serve-yourself buffet salads, entres, deserts... There are other good restaurants within walking distance, also.

A tiny place for falafel and other entres. I keep forgetting about that place. It is so small. I see that it is frequently very busy. Let me know what you think.
