Built in 1856 it originally served as the Mechanic Institute of then Mashamshire. It was designed by the respected William Perkin of Perkin and Backhouse of Leeds in Victorian Italianate style. In 2017-18 its internal was redesigned and fully refurbished by Langton Holdings Ltd as a showcase for there work.

Masham has a selection of pubs, restaurants, cafes, butchers and local fruit and vegetable shops all within walking distance of the cottage and there is a local market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. There is a parking place outside the cottage and a small patio with outdoor bench.
