This is one of my favorite State parks in Arizona. It makes for the perfect day trip and the hike is moderate. Payson is a quaint town with charming restaurants and shops. The drive is one of my favorite parts, seeing the transition from the Sonoran Desert to Pine Trees is truly unique to Arizona!

“Located at about 6,500 feet elevation, the Tonto Creek Fish Hatchery is a great place to escape searing desert summer heat, or to frolic in winter snow. The hatchery and surrounding wetland area provide outstanding opportunities for learning adventures and family outings such as picnics, hiking, and observing wildlife. Hatchery grounds include the Hatchery operation itself, as well as surrounding wetlands and streams. These habitats are essential to the survival of many types wildlife in Arizona, providing opportunities for viewing many species, especially birds.”

“Payson Sawmill Theatre has 6 screens. Locally owned movie theater for new releases on the big screen, with options for private screenings. It is built on the land where our old sawmill stood for 40 years. The wood beams are from the old sawmill and it is home to the old whistle that would blow at the beginning and end of each shift and at the noon lunch hour. ”

“The Pine-Strawberry Museum in Pine, Arizona, was opened in 1979 for the purpose of displaying artifacts related to the prehistory and history of Pine and its twin among the pines, Strawberry. All around us, the Mogollon Rim is a wilderness of ethereal beauty, carved majestically into unmatched proportions. Much of what is displayed in the Pine-Strawberry Museum today is in tribute to the dedication and hard work of our founding families. The museum houses prehistoric artifacts found in the land area of Pine and Strawberry Valleys and near plateaus, as well as artifacts actually bought and used by the earliest settlers to the communities.”
