A World Heritage site since 1998 famous for its 12th century ribbed vault, the oldest and best preserved in Europe, the hospital was originally built by Geoffrey III in the 1160’s, to ‘salve his soul those of his parents and to help the poor.’ A shelter for the poor and home for orphans the hospital also became an important resting place for pilgrims in the Middle Ages.
