Apart from relaxing on site, there are plenty of things to see and do around Gower all year round. Here are just a few of our faves… Oxwich Bay The Main Attraction!! Oxwich Bay has a wonderful huge sweeping sandy beach spanning 2.5 miles (4km) and is a popular spot for swimming and watersports including diving, sailing, water skiing and windsurfing. There is a public footpath from the bay which takes you along the cliffs from Oxwich Bay, around Oxwich Point, and to Port Eynon Bay. Oxwichs’ unique landscape features sand dunes, salt marshes, woodland, And a wetland site at the rear of the dunes forms Oxwich Burrows National Nature Reserve . The dunes are crossed by a small stream called Nicholaston Pill. The bay ends at the eastern end with the cliffs of High Tor; but at low tide, a continuous sandy beach connects with Three Cliffs Bay beyond. On 1 February 2007, The Travel Magazine named Oxwich beach the most beautiful in Britain.(Wikipedia) Parking can be expensive, so enjoy the free parking at the chalet and walk 5 mins down the lane to the cross roads and take a left and follow the signs to the beach! (The lane is flat, however the walk can take longer with little ones!) Generally one of the calmer bays on Gower, sometimes the waves can get a little lumpy, especially an hour either side of high tide if the surf reports show swells over 4 foot. We would recommend familiarising yourself with the tide times (in the TV cupboard, or ‘my tide times’ app and ‘magicseaweed’ app for the surf height.) before getting into the water! Its ideal for families and young children as the bay is so flat, so there is plenty of splashing around to be enjoyed without getting in too deep. Oxwich faces East, so I would HIGHLY recommend getting up a little early and heading down to the beach for sun rise. In the right conditions, heading down in the evening to watch a full moon rise can be just as magical! Open water swimming Open water swimming/dipping is the fastest growing sport in the Uk, up over 300% since the pandemic. Oxwich Bay is perfect for those wanting to get into it for the first time, or for the more experienced. Oxwich Castle From the chalet, walk towards the cross roads – turn right up the hill. The castle is on your left and is signposted. It’s currently closed (2022) but we hope will be open again soon! Oxwich Point Walk From Oxwich Castle, follow the track on the right and the walking signposts all the way to the very end of Oxwich! Remember to wear sturdy walking boots and water/snacks, as the walk can be muddy and uneven in places. The walk will take you across the fields with stunning views over Port Eynon, across the rocky point and into the Woods, past ‘The Rock Slide’ and ending up going past St. Itlyds Church. Follow the road back to the cross roads! This takes about 2 hours, give or take, (as we had a grumpy 5 year old in tow!) St Illtyds Church A less strenuous walk is to visit the church (the reverse of the walk above). At the cross roads, carry straight on past the Oxwich Bay Hotel/Pub. The church is a few minutes walk up the start of the footpath. Steeped in history, and dating back to the 6th century! this is a must to visit. Oxwich Bay Hotel & Pub The Oxwich Bay Hotel is just a few minutes on fro the cross-roads, towards the beach. It has a lovely menu and range of refreshing drinks to enjoy in the beer garden overlooking the bay. Let the kids loose in the field next to the garden too for a bit of peace and quiet! Oxwich Beach shops/facilities There are 2 beach shops by the car park. Both have a little café area and sell ice creams, snacks beach toys etc. The far right beach shop also sells beers/cider/wine! There are 2 toilet blocks, one by the entrance to the beach by the hotel and one just past the second shop along the beach. There aren’t any showers (yet!) But the toilet blocks have drinking water in the taps for refilling bottles. Opposite the beach car park is the Dunes ‘Beach shop’ which is a mini convenience store, Fish & Chips and Coffee shop. It has various other hot food, ice cream and snacks. You can also pick up any forgotten wetsuits/shoes, towels, body boards and beach games here. They also have toilet facilities. The Dunes are open from 9am-6pm weekdays and up to 8pm for weekends in high season and school holidays There is also a burger van selling various hot food. Rose’s Café @Perriswood Farm Overlooking the bay and across the sea, the café is a cute little wooden café, selling breakfasts until 12, sandwiches, panini’s and childrens lunches, along with our famous Joes Icecream! It’s about a 5 minute drive back up to the main road, turn right and next left when you see the Perriswood sign. Penrice Estate Oxwich bay and surrounding land is all part of the Penrice Estate which is also steeped in history. Usually, on the first Sunday in August (second Sunday in 2022 due to Iron Man event on), is the Gower Show. The Gower Show is a great family day out, to see all the animals and enjoy local produce. Perriswood – Archery & Falconry Centre Perfect for Archery enthusiasts, or a family outing – Perriswood Farm, run by Brian and Julie, caters for all abilities from ages 5 upwards! Brian also holds the Guinness World record for the most arrows shot in a 24hour period! Gower Coast Adventures – Dolphin watching! Based on the beach, Gower Coast Adventures run boat trips from April onwards that take you around south Gower coastline up to Worms Head. At the right time of the year, Gower is privileged to have pods of common dolphins visit us! Advance booking is essential, either online, or at their hut on the beach (close to the Oxwich Bay Hotel). Massage & Treatments If you’re looking to unwind and relax durning your stay with a massage, then I would highly recommend visiting Nerys Holt of Gower Garden Therapies who is just a 5 minute drive into Reynoldston, the next village up. Pre booking essential King Arthur Hotel Sunday Lunch is superb at the King Arthur Hotel and can be booked up weeks in advance. A popular wedding venue in the next village up from us, Reynoldston, you can watch the beautiful people getting married while sitting in arguably one of the best pub gardens on Gower, surrounded by sheep and the odd horse! Parkmill & Heritage Centre Gower Heritage Centre is another great family day out, with a working water mill! It has a café, a little farm and lots of things to explore for all ages. The Little Village Bakery is also highly recommended - we always stop to get their famous sourdough loaf (excellent toasted with a thick spread of welsh salted butter!) On the opposite side of the road is the entrance to the woods – which lead to Three cliffs bay. This is a magical walk along the winding river, especially in spring/summer, overlooked by Pennard Castle and The Great Sand dune, onto Cliffs Bay. Hope you enjoy as much of this as we have over the years Hannah x
