Opening Hours: Wednesday to Sunday 9.00-16.00 Price: admission is 30 Baht This is the main museum of northern Thailand. It is under the patronage of their royal majesties. It was renovated in 1996 to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the founding of Chiangmai.

There are 15 separate rooms covering various aspects of life in ancient and modern Chiang Mai. Some rooms consist mainly of display panels and a few artefacts, and there are others featuring scale models depicting traditional villages in the region. The best rooms were life-size tableaux of a shop, a workshop, a market scene, and a typical village house, complete with kitchen and bedroom. Staff are polite and helpful. Well worth the 90 baht entrance fee. You can also get a 180 baht ticket covering all three museums (this one, plus Lanna Folklore Museum and Chiang Mai Historical Centre).
