The municipality of Sauda, with assistance from the Scenic Routes Section of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, is behind the building of the path and has secured the final stretch of the path up to the entrance to the mine. The path, which has been cut into the mountainside, was severely damaged during a flood in the autumn of 2015, and has now been restored with new bridges along the Storelva river. Extensive work to protect the path against rockslides has also been carried out over the last year, in order to make the walk as safe as possible without detracting from the experience. The mining path is the final element to complete the attraction that was opened in 2016. Allmannajuvet was designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor and is a tribute to the workers who toiled their way through the rock to extract zinc from 1881 to 1899. The 3 buildings with a gallery, a café and service facilities have now been supplemented by a staging hut where visitor don helmets in preparation for the spectacular walk along the river. Finally arriving at the mines, they venture inside to gain insight into the strenuous lives of the miners who cut their way through the rock, and in the course of 18 years excavated 12 000 tonnes of zinc ore and several hundred meters of mine drifts in the tough rock. The NPRA Scenic Routes Section is pleased to welcome visitors to the first season at full operation in Allmannajuvet.
