One of the oldest hotels in South Africa, you can feel the history as you walk onto the famous verandah. On this verandah, just a quick stroll from Chamomile Cottage, you can enjoy the almost equally famous 'Happy Hour' Gin & Tonics every day from 5 to 6 pm. For colder days choose a seat in the charming bar area or around the indoor fire in the lounge.. Also good for cappuccino / tea & cake, and a wide selection of meals - breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (FYI: two of SA's prime ministers were born in the Riebeek Valley - Jan Smuts in 1870 on a farm in Ongegund, and DF Malan in 1874 on the farm Allesverloren).

Don't leave Riebeek without a visit to Eve's Eatery, quaint restaurant with quirky decor serving meals from breakfast to dinner - watch out for the daily specials, excellent value. (the only minus for us is that cappuccino wasn't on offer)

A beautiful historic hotel, run by the absolutely charming Johan Kotze, who is firmly putting this grand old lady on the map. Situated in Riebeek West (5 minute drive from Riebeek Kasteel) you can enjoy breakfast, tea, lunch, drinks, and dinner, in the garden or the delightful restaurant, and drinks in the cosy bar. Bit of history - this was originally built in 1903 as a home for orphans that survived the concentration camps of the Anglo-Boer War.

Shopping

You can purchase Riebeek Cellars wine & olive oil (in a lovely tin with picture of Riebeek Kasteel) from their small outlet on Plein Street (opposite the open square). ..... Also, DON'T MISS A VISIT to THE WINE KOLLECTIVE in Short Street - a small wine shop which only stocks wines from surrounding boutique wineries (make it your 1st stop for weekend supply and your last to stock up before your leave :-). In their words " the only wine outlet in Riebeek Kasteel, the Swartland and maybe even the known universe that is solely dedicated to the special wines of the small, the famous and the utterly unknown wineries situated within a two-hour donkey ride from Riebeek Kasteel".
