A great casual restaurant & bar within a reasonable driving distance to our house. We moved from California and this is the closest thing to anything on the west coast outside of Manhattan. They have a great outdoor space on the water, which makes it a summertime favorite.

You want a high end dinner out this is your place. Can take months to get reservations, but there's a trick: Get here at 4.30 or earlier and stand in line for a seat at the bar. They open at 5.

Google "best pizza in the US" and Frank Pepe New Haven 'apizza' is likely to come up. They're famous for their white clam pizza, but we prefer pepperoni or just cheese. Pick up or eat in only.

Some of the best pizza I've ever had, and hands down the coolest place in New Rochelle. The owner hosts a pizza TV show on Vice and really knows his stuff. Family friendly and well priced. Good to make reservations.

This is our go-to date night restaurant in the next town over, Bronxville, which incidentally is also a nice place to explore during the day.

A fine place to go for a family-friendly meal. During the summer they have a nice outdoor area on North Avenue. And it's within walking distance, which makes for a nice evening. They also have a small market here if you need any of the basics like milk or cereal.

It's a bit of a drive and off the beaten path, but this place has some of the best NY pizza in the area. Parking is horrible, but it's worth it.

The closest grocery store to our house. Just fine for the basics, but we prefer DeCicco's or Fairway if we're doing a weekly shop. Deli is pretty good but beer selection is abysmal.

My go to for most groceries, not the cheapest option, but it's a nice experience. Think whole foods, but a little less crazy on the food sources (read: they sell Cheetos). Great meat department and excellent beer selection. Pro-tip for dad: you can do your shop then go upstairs to the beer bar and they'll ring you up while you drink a cold one (as long as they don't have to weigh anything -- no scale at the bar register).

Neighborhoods

Arthur Avenue is the Little Italy of the Bronx, and my favorite street in NYC. Check out the meat markets, fishmonger (selling oysters and/or clams on the street), and of course Borgatti's Ravioli & Egg Noodles - which sells fresh pasta by the pound. If you want to have a proper Italian dinner one night when in town, get your stuff from here and make sure to leave time to explore the neighborhood.
