I try to restrict my visits here to only once a week, though I don't always succeed! This is a great cafe serving classic "chips-with-everything" (and the chips are really good...) meals, roast lunches, omelettes etc. My favourite dish is the "broccoli with cream and cheese" - and I always ask for the roast potatoes instead of the chips. Tell Wayne I sent you, and you'll get an even warmer welcome than the very smiley greeting he gives all his customers. The prices are great, and the service is almost supernaturally speedy. Not posh, but good hearty food, and plenty of it. He stays open until 8pm in peak season, unlike most of the other cafes in town.

The 'house blend' coffee is absolutely first-rate. I usually get the cafetiere option. Your host, Kate, is fun and lively and always up for a laugh. The food is good too, with lots of gluten-free options, and the salads are just a little more imaginative than your standard fare. It's a bustling, chatty place, but the back room is quieter if that suits you better. Always a warm welcome!

Step back in time to the 50s or 60s with a visit to the station cafe. Rough and ready it may be, but the food is good and plentiful and economical. I usually go for the 'ploughman's lunch' which is enough to keep me going the whole day.

Drinks & Nightlife

A good old-fashioned pub near the Back Beach serving decent ales and ciders. I've not tried the food, but I hear it's tasty. Atmospheric and friendly.

The Ship is probably the best pub to go on a summer's evening. You can take your drink out to the terrace and watch the sun go down over the beautiful Teign Estuary, with distant views of Haytor on Dartmoor. It can get very busy at peak season, but there's plenty of room outside (nobody seems too concerned if you take your drink onto the back beach itself) and there's always something to watch - boats coming and going, ships tying up at the dock, rowers out in Seine boats and gigs....

Entertainment & Activities

The poor old pier took quite a battering in the storms of 2014 (which also washed away the railway line at Dawlish three miles away - on my birthday!), and parts of it remain closed, sadly. But the amusement arcade is a great way to keep kids (and adults...) occupied for a while, especially if the weather is being less than helpful.

Arts & Culture

Our lovely new theatre/art gallery/cinema replaced the crumbling old Carlton Theatre a few years ago, much to the horror of some local traditionalists who gnashed their teeth and waved their fists at the introduction of something fresh and modern to this brilliant town! There's a fantastic cafe-bar - the upstairs part of which has excellent views through huge windows of the beach and sea. The auditorium hosts concerts, live theatre, live relays, cinema.... and local artists exhibit their work in the foyer. Definitely worth a visit to see what's happening.

This great little museum is a total treasure, and gratifyingly inexpensive to visit! You can learn about supergroup Muse (who hail from the town), Donald Crowhurst (the lone sailor portrayed by Colin Firth in 'The Mercy'), the mystery 16th century wreck that may be part of the Spanish Armada, the French invasion of Teignmouth (the last on British mainland) plus oodles of other fascinating facts about the town's past, all beautifully and accessibly presented. Allow an hour or so for a visit to this lively, lovely museum.

Shopping

Teignmouth's charity shops are of a consistently high quality - Rowcroft being just one of the seven or eight currently open. I view it as a treat every other weekend or so to spend a couple of hours "doing the rounds" of the whole lot of them, each of which stocks the usual mix of clothes, books, DVDs, bric a brac, kitchenware, small electrical items etc. Oxfam have an excellent secondhand bookshop here too. I challenge you to look around and NOT buy something.....

Essentials

Waitrose is the nearest shop to my house (about 8 minutes away) and has the usual range of high quality foodstuffs and household essentials. Yes, you can spend a lot of money at Waitrose, but they have bargains too if you keep a beady eye open. It's worth noting that you can park there for free for 90 minutes, so you have time to pop into town afterwards.

Sightseeing

If you're a National Trust enthusiast, and you're here mid-week, don't miss Bradley on the edge of Newton Abbot. Fascinating ancient house surrounded by beautiful grounds and woodland.
