It's walking distance from our house, has a great movie house where you can drink beer and eat pretty great food while watching your flick. Nice outdoor seating, too. My favorite burger is the Communication Breakdown Burger!

Really great fro-yo in the heart of downtown, with multiple flavor options, a ton of toppings, fun-to-read quotes on the walls, and walking distance from the park blocks. Very fun atmosphere...there's gotta be a great game you could play with all the quotes on the walls!

It's epic and beautiful, with high basalt walls and a beautiful waterfall at the end. Go prepared to get wet up to nearly your waist -- if you're up for the adventure, this is a very fun activity for limber adventurous types who want to get a firsthand feel for what the Columbia Gorge is all about!

It's epic and beautiful, with high basalt walls and a beautiful waterfall at the end. Go prepared to get wet up to nearly your waist -- if you're up for the adventure, this is a very fun activity for limber adventurous types who want to get a firsthand feel for what the Columbia Gorge is all about!
A ton of trails, really close to our house (you can walk across the bridge, turn left, and the trail starts at the top of the cement stairs), great views, wonderful for hiking or running...there are even some mt. bike trails. There is a Forest Park map in the basket upstairs.

The Oregon coast is a must if you have the time. Haystack Rock is stunning, it's one of the closest most scenic beaches to Portland, and the downtown area is wonderful, with many great little shops and restaurants.

Just great for a stroll...in the heart of downtown, with benches, statues, and all sorts of people doing who knows what. Just yesterday, I saw a PSU class learning to salsa dance...

This is one of my all time favorite parks in Portland (and we have lots to choose from!) -- it's a little piece of wild in the heart of the Pearl district. Great spot for eating lunch, having a chat, reading a book, or just spacing out and reflecting on how good your life is (or isn't...).

This is one of my all time favorite parks in Portland (and we have lots to choose from!) -- it's a little piece of wild in the heart of the Pearl district. Great spot for eating lunch, having a chat, reading a book, or just spacing out and reflecting on how good your life is (or isn't...).
On a hot day, there are fewer better places to be, with a cool drink or an ice cream (from the shop right across the street), and your suit on, or even just a pair of shorts -- dip your feet in the water, watch the kids play...not the greatest place on a warm sunny day if you're not into the sound of laughing and screaming children...it's a pretty popular place for that. But really nice to sit on the wall above the 'falls' for a bit and eat.

It's really nice to walk, ride, or stroll through the park, along the esplanade on a beautiful day, right next to the river. It's a great loop to start on one side (perhaps downtown near the fountain) and walk to and cross the Hawthorne Bridge, walk / ride the other side of the esplanade to the Steel Bridge, cross the river, and return to your starting point. Multiple festivals take place along the waterfront here, too.

It's so calming, relaxing and beautiful, and a great place to go when it's hot outside because it's much cooler in the gardens.

Like the Japanese Garden, the Chinese Garden is really beautiful, but with a much different feel, and right in the middle of downtown / China town. A great escape from the hustle and bustle of downtown.

One of the best aspects of Portland, in my opinion, are the multiple different neighborhoods we have. I love recommending to people to go to the various neighborhoods and just walk around, take in the scene, dip into shops, restaurants, book stores, ice cream shops. Hawthorne is definitely high on my list because it's a great taste of Portland!

you have to go to Powell's! Even if you don't like to read! Well, maybe not...but even then, Powell's is amazing. It really is a city of books...go check it out. My husband and I went on one of our first dates here..we just picked out books to show one another and see what the other thought...I bet you could be even more creative than we were. 1005 W Burnside Styou have to go to Powell's! Even if you don't like to read! Well, maybe not...but even then, Powell's is amazing. It really is a city of books...go check it out. Closer than Fred Meyer (Fred's) but not nearly as great -- but if you just need the basics, and don't want to go as far, it totally does the job.
