Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve Visitor Center
17000 Armstrong Woods RdA little farther drive than Muir Woods, but if you want to see Redwoods without a crowd, this is the place. Spend some time after the big trees at great Russian River wineries. See the spectacular Pacific coast in nearby Jenner or Bodega Bay.

Underutilized park that has great hiking trails, a nice playground for kids, volleyball nets and grills. There's a reservoir where you can rent canoes and kayaks just a little further up the road.

Stinson Beach
Great beach in Marin County with lots of sand.
Start at the Cliff House Museum above Ocean Beach and head towards the abandoned Sutro Baths. The path zig zags up and down some pretty steep hills. You'll see the Pacific Ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge. Waterfront hiking through wildflowers, with shipwreck views of the USS San Francisco & access to the Sutro Baths ruins. You will see people from all over the world hiking this route.
