Tvrđava sv. Mihovila smjestila se na povoljnom položaju podno kojeg se razvio srednjovjekovni Šibenik. Izgrađena je na strmoj stijeni, sedamdesetak metara iznad razine mora, koja kontrolira i brani ušće rijeke Krke, ali i druge važne prometne pravce prema sjeveru i jugu Dalmacije. Arheološki nalazi sugeriraju da je pružala zaštitu lokalnom stanovništvu još od doba Ilira. Ime duguje crkvi posvećenoj arkanđelu Mihovilu, koja se od najranijeg doba nalazila unutar tvrđave. Simbolička veza tvrđave i grada vidljiva je na više razina – od zidova tvrđave potekli su gradski bedemi koji su okruživali i stoljećima štitili Šibenik, a sveti Mihovil je od najranijeg perioda nebeski zaštitnik grada. Te dvije tvrdnje jasno su pokazane na najstarijem gradskom pečatu iz 13. stoljeća, koji prikazuje arkanđela kako bdije nad gradskim zidinama.

Objekt je financirao i naručio izgradnju Jusuf Mašković, visoki dostojanstvenik na turskom dvoru, inače rodom iz Vrane ili iz Pakoštana. Započet je u vrijeme izbijanja Kandijskog rata 1644. godine i zbog smrti Jusufa Maškovića u siječnju 1646. godine nije dovršen. Objekt je raskošan i monumentalan a trebao je služiti kao han i rezidencija Maškovića za stare dane. Radi se o najzapadnijem spomeniku svjetovne turske arhitekture u Europi. Po konačnom oslobođenju Vrane 1699. godine han je dodijeljen u vlasništvo obitelji Borelli koja s toga mjesta upravlja cijelim Vranskim feudom od 1752. do 1881. godine. Do danas u hanu borave potomci Borellijevih predradnika, obitelj Pelicarić, zahvaljujući čemu je ovaj spomenik očuvan od puno većeg uništenja. Većina oštećenja nastala je paležom objekata koji su izvršili partizani zauzimanjem hana nakon završetka rata 1945. godine.

The building was financed and commissioned by Jusuf Mašković, a high dignitary at the Turkish court, otherwise a native of Vrana or Pakoštan. It was started at the time of the outbreak of the Candian War in 1644 and was not completed due to the death of Jusuf Mašković in January 1646. The building is luxurious and monumental, and it was supposed to serve as an inn and residence of Mašković in the old days. It is the westernmost monument of secular Turkish architecture in Europe. After the final liberation of Vrana in 1699, the inn was assigned to the Borelli family, which managed the entire Vrana fief from 1752 to 1881. To this day, the descendants of Borelli's foremen, the Pelicarić family, live in the inn, thanks to which this monument was preserved from much greater destruction. Most of the damage was caused by the burning of buildings by the partisans when they occupied the inn after the end of the war in 1945.
