Food Scene

The Newt is thriving - it now has on site Roman Villa (yes, real) as well as restaurants, experiences, views - and is a tribute to what careful curation of the food and food production experience can give. An amazing (manicured) walk around the estate, beautiful cider making facility to view, a great restaurant (although they don't yet serve our cheese...). £15 entry in normal times, though this is an annual membership fee, and they seem to waive the fee at low season. Well worth a visit.
New kid on the block, a bakery that opens at 7am serves delicious breakfasts and closes at 4pm. Perfect if you can’t face shopping. We are in an ongoing dialogue as to whether their Lovington Bun beats the Cinnamon Bun. Discuss.

we highly recommend this. It is 5 minutes drive from here in Buckhorn Weston and is run by a collective of young staff who seem to really enjoy their work. The food is excellent gastro pub (great pea risotto). They have boules and other games in the fine garden. Call 01963 370396 to book a table. run by the wonderful Jules and Chef Steve Horrell, this is an excellent, relaxed restaurant within the Hauser & Wirth contemporary art gallery in Bruton. They have a fantastic staff, and approach to food all in beautiful surroundings. Everything they cook is sourced from within 5 miles and the butter is produced “in house”. Expect braised fennel and chargrilled beetroot smoked salmon rather than creamy sauces, though I’m sure these would be excellent if they did them. Amazing cocktails using borage and ginger. The first and last Friday of the month they have music (DJ mainly) events on Friday evenings but best to check. Serves our cheese Renegade Monk so it must be good. Check the prog

10 mins from cottage north - on the road to Bruton past the racecourse, and on the left. Not open Sundays, annoyingly. Does good produce, inc raw milk – and our cheese, Renegade Monk and is now branching into homeware and clothes. Dynamic family!

Owned by our friend Lynne Franks, we love the raw chocolate hot drinks, the hemp beer, the plant based food. It's particularly good for women (possibly because Lynne received an OBE for her services to women) but men also welcome...

good, a more traditional village pub with older country folk as regulars. Expect men returning from shoots (with pedal pushers and foxy hats) to be at the bar. The beer is excellent, the food is old style pub (and they serve our cheese, Renegade Monk!). It is 20 minutes walk west from the cottage along a lovely quiet marsh lane so very good if you don’t want to drive.

30 mins east - you may have driven past this on A303. This is a world heritage site. We love the new visitor centre, and the stones themselves are awe inspiring. You can get in for FREE with a National Trust card (otherwise tickets are £22 for adults) http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/stonehenge/

Haynes Motor Museum - is revamped and apparently very good. My Dad and our kids rate this as the best museum they have ever been to. Not into cars so don't know, but if you are you should have a look. http://haynesmotormuseum.com

Hauser & Wirth Art Gallery, Bruton - 15 mins north of cottage - I’ve put quite a lot of information about the eating available at the Roth Bar and Grill above, but actually this is a world class contemporary art gallery showing works from Phyllida Barlow, and Pipilotti Reist. Really worth a visit if you are into art, or have children as they have a giant bucket (a work of art) in the garden, and first Sunday of each month is art class morning. Our not for profit WhereWestBegins.org.uk runs film events there regularly.

I'm not a huge fan of Morrisons (stocking is terrible) BUT they do stock wonky veg, organic milk, and their buyer has just called to ask about our cheese so I feel a debt of loyalty to them.
