Neighborhoods

Øvre Holmegate (more famously known as Fargegaten) is a picturesque and (as the name suggests in Norwegian) colourful street in Stavanger city centre. It’s best known for the good vibes, especially for drinks and sitting outside in relatively cold weather - thanks to all the heated outdoor seating. My favourite spot is sitting with a beer, street side, in Bøker & Børst, or enjoying the best cocktail in town (the Nordic Daquiri) from Pjoltr & Punsj.

The most interesting part of the Stavanger Øst neighbourhood is located at the end of Kvitsøygata. Here you’ll find T-Time wine bar (and Norway’s only vinyl press), Øst pub, Fortou Asian style street food, and frequent events such as pop up art galleries, concerts and more at Tou Scene. Perfect for a night out, soaking up some sun (maybe take a dip in the ocean) and enjoy some good company outdoors with views towards the sea and the amazing Ryfylke mountains.

Pedersgata is the Main Street just parallel to my apartment street. It’s an up-and-coming food scene in Stavanger with new restaurants appearing frequently, tying together the harbour area, and the trendy Stavanger Øst area. You’ll find restaurants from all corners of the world, along with pubs and some quirky shops. Take it from a local - the best food and drinks scene in Stavanger is not the harbour or touristy (but pretty) old town. It’s right here in my neighbourhood!

Godalen is a nearby recreational area, perfect for swimming on a good day, or just enjoying the good views. I often take my runs here, but it’s also good for a nice stroll, or to just hang out on a nice day. This is the place to go for sea and mountain views, swimming in the sea, BBQ, and more.

A little out-of-town adventure gets you to this amazing but little known haven in the middle of the sea. Book a trip with Eldhug Adventures ahead and go kayaking with them among Kvitsøy archipelago’s 365 islands and islets. Eat with Nina & Ronny from Eldhug, or at Grøningen restaurant (make sure to check they are open and book ahead). Take the 15 bus from Stavanger to Mekjarvik, and the corresponding ferry to Kvitsøy.

Getting the nr 800 «Byøyene» speed boat from Fiskepiren to visit Lindøy, and many other small islands like Vassøy, Langøy and Kalvøy is highly underrated. On a warm, sunny day it will be your private island hopping paradise! The boat fare is included on a Kolumbus ticket, and you can travel as much as you like, hop-on-hop-off, on a 130 kr 24-hour ticket. Ask me for details if you want. I work on Vassøy, and know all the best spots!

Best gelato in town. Please don’t go inside and ask for ice cream! They’ll send you packing… unfortunately I haven’t had the best customer treatment here, but it is maybe part of the real Italian deal? My go-to combination is chocolate gelato and mango sorbet.

Nightlife

It’s a big deal in Stavanger to have the year’s first “outdoor drink”, locally named “utepils”. We love to sit outside in any temperature, as long as it’s sunny. That’s why you’ll see a lot of us sitting outside relatively early in the day! It might also be because I’m old (33) that I don’t have any clubbing recommendations! But honestly, Stavanger “nightlife” is best enjoyed from 5 pm to sunset. Here are my favourite spots to enjoy the famous “utepils” and a few other places to drink the night away.
I love the vibe here, and it’s always busy. Grab a beer and a street view seat outdoors and watch the conglomerate of people walk by, or pick a table inside for a round with their board game selection.

Lysefjorden

Lysefjorden is an amazing, scenic area you’ve probably already heard of. It’s world famous! You can get a cruise exploring it from below from the main harbour, but if you are able, the best way to explore Lysefjorden is on foot. Get the bus, or rent a car and try out my favourite hikes. You can find them in my Hiking Guide, or use the Turistforeningen website to find locations, maps and tips for each hike.

Kolumbus public transport service

The Kolumbus app can be downloaded from the App Store, and you can purchase tickets here that count for Stavanger and proximity. The ticket works for most speed boats, trains, buses and the city bikes. The nearest city bikes are located by the Scandic hotel, and can be used all over town and surrounding areas. There is a city bike rack and bus stop (the “Bekhuskaien” stop, bus 1) 1 minute front my apartment.

Order food from Foodora or Wolt

If you’re feeling lazy (or ill), download the Foodora or Wolt apps to get food deliveries right to the kitchen. Let the delivery person know that the address should be Mellomgata 6, and to deliver through the street level kitchen window. Open the right kitchen window when they phone you for the delivery. Super easy, and you didn’t even have to get dressed.

Get groceries and cook at home

Eating out is expensive. Why not cook in my kitchen? I have all base ingredients and lots of equipment. You can get groceries from Kiwi or Coop Prix, just 5 minutes away from the apartment. Check it out on you mobile map for directions. Nearby you can also find Coop Extra (a better variety of food). Meny at Herbarium has even more variety/fancy products and fresh meat/fish if you’re after something special. If you need something on a Sunday, you’ll have to go to Joker on Storhaug. Joker is a 10 minute walk away, mainly uphill.

Rules for buying alcohol in Norway

The age limit for enjoying alcohol up to 22% ABV in Norway is 18, and 20 for anything stronger. Note that only alcohol up to 4.6% ABV is available in regular grocery shops. The sale ends at 8 pm on weekdays and 6 pm on on Saturdays. Separate rules may be enforced on bank holidays and the day before bank holidays. For anything stronger than 4.6% (normal beer) you have to go to Vinmonopolet. The nearest location is a 5 minute walk away from my apartment. Vinmonopolet usually shuts at 6 pm weekdays, and 4 pm Saturdays. Sundays are always closed.

Perfect for renting backpacks, skis, tents, cooking equipment, and even kayaks. Kayaks are also available to rent from Ut i Naturen AS.

How to dress in Stavanger

Anything goes in terms of style - we’re a liberal city accepting everyone from goths to hikers. But make sure you don’t freeze while you’re here. The wind is usually around 6-12 mph, so a wind proof jacket or coat is a must, even in summer. Nights are often life saver, so bring layers to put on should you find yourself in the shade or out of luck temperature wise. Thin wool underwear is a must! Stavanger weather is unpredictable and sometimes moody, so expect showers and don’t trust the weather forecast blindly. Leave your umbrella at home, and bring a water proof outer layer instead.
