Thank the Great Recession for this 700-plus-acre tract of protected forest—one of the largest undeveloped parcels on the island. This area was slated for high-density housing, but the developer went bankrupt, and the Whidbey Camano Land Trust led a fundraising drive in order to buy it. Fifteen hundred folks pitched in to create this community forest, now containing 7 miles of trails (many old skid roads) perfect for easy strolls and long runs. Many areas in this forest are also protected as a refuge for wildlife. There are many miles of trails here that are accessible from three different parking lots. Grab a map from the Whidbey Camano Land Trust website or from Greenbank Farm to make sure you never lose your way.

A former Department of Natural Resources property once slated to be logged, Dugualla is now a 586-acre satellite of Deception Pass State Park. Hike or run more than 5 miles of trails here, following old skid roads and newer single-tracks through mature stands of timber, including a couple of old-growth giants. There is also a mile of coastline to walk when the tide is low. And while this property lacks amenities other than trail signs, it also lacks crowds.

Putney Woods, Saratoga Woods and Metcalf Trail System There is no entry fee to utilize these three connecting trail systems. Local volunteers created these trails and work hard to maintain them. There is a large trailhead parking lot off of Lone Lake Road that leads to a large web of interconnected trails. There are also a few picnic areas to stop at and rest while enjoying some food. It is a good idea to print off a map and keep it with you so that you can explore the woods and get back safely to your car. Hikers, bikers, and horses are allowed on the trails. It is usually pretty quiet on these trails as they are not overly crowded.

The trail in Joseph Whidbey State Park is a 3.6-mile loop. It is not too strenuous, so it would be fine to bring kids along. A Discover Pass or day-use permit is required and parking is limited. This trail is usually fairly quiet and takes you down to the beach. There are some great views of Lopez Island and the Olympic Mountains on the beach. It is great for hiking or trail running and dogs are allowed as long as they are kept on a leash. Be ready for some mud if it has been wet lately and to turn around when you hit signage for private property.

This trail is super short and flat, making a great quick stop. It is an only one-mile round trip, has an elevation gain of 10 feet, and is only 10 minutes away from Deception Pass State Park. This spit is super cool because it juts out into the water, offering views all around. You can see Mount Baker, Hope Island, Fidalgo Island, Mount Erie, and the inner portion of Puget Sound. It is also a great place to launch a kayak or paddleboard. Paddle over to Skagit or Hope Island and back or explore the coast of Whidbey Island. This is also a great spot to hike in and go fishing.

Although camping is no longer allowed and beach access is not currently allowed, a hike in South Whidbey State Park speaks to any tree lover’s soul. There are some huge trees here, including western hemlock, Sitka spruce, Douglas-fir, and western red cedar trees. There are even an impressive 500-year-old cedar and lush undergrowth. The moss and ferns on Whidbey Island always make the forest seem magical to me. There are picnic tables and shelters in which to enjoy lunch. This park requires a Discover Pass or a one-use pass.

The parking lot at Fort Ebey State Park can get you to Lake Pondilla, the beach, and the Bluff Trail. If you follow the Bluff Trail southward, you can gaze down at the beach and watch for whales, tugboats, and container ships. This hike also includes the Fort Ebey bunkers and gun locations. Bring a flashlight with you if you want to explore these bunkers. Near these bunkers is a large grassy area that is prime for paragliders. Other features in the park include forested areas and ravines with gorgeous rhododendrons and the base of an old water tower. There is enough hiking here to last several days, so plan your routes accordingly.

Earth Sanctuary is the vision of its founder, Chuck Pettis. A long-time environmentalist, Chuck decided to take personal responsibility to enhance biodiversity and create a sustainable society by creating Earth Sanctuary. With a 500-year plan to restore the 72-acres of Earth Sanctuary to mature old-growth forest with maximum diversity of birds, wildlife, plants, and fungi, Earth Sanctuary is an exemplary model for ecological design. Over the past 50 years he has built numerous environmental artworks, among them labyrinths and stone circles. In 1977 he built the Ellis Hollow Stone Circle, the first energetically and astronomically aligned stone circle in the United States.

Fort Casey, Fort Worden and Fort Flagler together were known as the "Triangle of Fire," a trio of strategically placed fortifications defending the entrance to the Puget Sound at the turn of the 20th Century. Constructed in the late 1800s, Fort Casey was equipped for defense and used as a training facility up to the mid-1940s. The fort houses a pair of rare 10-inch disappearing guns. While the guns were the height of technology in the early 1900s, improvements in warships and the advent of airplanes soon rendered them obsolete. Two additional 3-inch mounted guns are also on display in their original emplacements. You can explore these batteries to your heart’s content. So round up your family, friends and history buffs, and step back in time to Fort Casey Historical State Park. From the romantic 1903-vintage lighthouse, with its own interpretive center and gift shop, to the catacomb-like bunkers and batteries, this historic military fort is sure to ignite curiosity. PARK FEATURES Fort Casey Historical State Park is a 999-acre marine camping park with 10,810 feet of saltwater shoreline on Puget Sound (Admiralty Inlet); it includes Keystone Spit, a 2-mile stretch of land separating Admiralty Inlet and Crocket Lake.

Coupeville is Washington State's second-oldest community and much of downtown harkens back to an era of more than a century ago. Hundred-year-old buildings that were once livery stables and barber shops are now wine tasting rooms and bookstores. There are also restaurants and small shops all along Front Street. Coupeville sits along the shores of Penn Cove. The Coupeville wharf juts out into the water from Front Street. The wharf’s iconic red building is a must-visit spot in Coupeville.
