What to drink

Desert Rain cocktail at Taft Diaz: This upscale Mexican restaurant in the trendy Stanton House hotel has amazing food, but its cocktail game is worth the visit alone. This smooth and refreshing drink is one of our favorites in the city.

Hibiscus Margarita at Taconeta: This hip taco shop down the street feels like you’re in Mexico City. We love pretty much everything on the menu but swear by the suadero and mushroom tacos. The real treat here though are the drink dispensers filled with margarita mix. Try them all or just stick with the hibiscus.

Tacate at The Tap: This is arguably the best dive bar in the southwest and their Tacates are as cold as they come. Busy weekend service and a slow trickle of regular during the week, everyone stops through The Tap for nachos, cheap beers, and some dancing. Sometimes we just stop in on a lazy afternoon for some chips and salsa (its spicy).

What to eat

A tamale from Tamales Lupitas: This small old-school shop on the edge of town always has a line. We love the red pork but you can’t go wrong with anything you get here.

Breakfast burrito at Savage Goods: this hip coffeeshop/bakery has some wonderful cold brew and delicious donuts but their breakfast burrito is on our weekly menu. We normally get it with bacon and green chiles, but you can’t go wrong with your order given their fresh tortillas and quality ingredients.

A mixed taco plate at Elemi: this cosy downtown Mexican restaurant’s chef was recently named a semifinalist for a James Beard Award. It’s hard to go wrong with your order here but we love sampling their different tacos - our favorite is the suadero.

A basket of rolled tocos + fries from Chico’s: This legendary fast food stop gets mixed reactions from El Pasoans. People either love it or hate it, but it is arguably the most well-know food stop in the city and we don’t think you can come through town without at least trying it. Crispy rolled tacos, bathed in sauce, and covered with thinly shredded cheese. Cash only. Best after sampling the What To Drink list below. (I love it, Emily not so much)

Drive along the Mission Trail: Visit the old missions that were core to early settlements in the area. We suggest starting at San Elizario Presidio Chapel, then Socorro Mission, and then Ysleta.

Take a hike through Guadalupe National Park: An hour and a half drive east is one of the nation’s most underrated National Parks and home to the highest point in Texas. For an adventure, set out early and try to reach the peak or for a slightly lower-key hike, head out to Devil’s Hall. (Alternatively head to White Sands National Park or take a weekend trip down to Big Bend)
