Built initially in 1589 in response to raids on Havana harbor, el Morro protected the mouth of the harbor with a chain being strung out across the water to the fort at La Punta. This colonial fort is a historical landmark great for views and photo shots of the city and the harbor. "The canon shooting ceremony at 9:00 pm every day is quite fun,--a kind of changing of the guard ceremony, and the Morro is a cool place to purchase souvenirs. You'll be on your feet, so wear good walking shoes".

Anticuaria El Navío, Calle Obispo 119, between Oficios and Mercaderes (tel. 7/861-3187), is a dusty old store selling expensive, rare and unusual books."
