The International Volleyball Hall of Fame In 1971, the Greater Holyoke Chamber of Commerce established an ad hoc committee for the purpose of promoting Holyoke, Massachusetts, birthplace of volleyball, as the future home of the Volleyball Hall of Fame (VHF). In 1978, the committee incorporated as Holyoke Volleyball Hall of Fame, Inc., a nonprofit corporation established for the purpose of planning, promoting, establishing and maintaining a living memorial to the sport of volleyball. The Volleyball Hall of Fame, at 444 Dwight St. in Holyoke opened to the public on June 6, 1987. A two-day volleyball tournament was hosted by the Volleyball Hall of Fame to celebrate the grand opening. William G. Morgan, inventor of volleyball at the Holyoke YMCA in 1895, was honored posthumously as first inductee of Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1985. Morgan was physical director of the Holyoke YMCA in 1895 when he came up with the concept and rules for volleyball - a sport he envisioned as a less-physically taxing sport than basketball, one that middle-aged men could play during their lunch hour. Douglas Beal, coach of 1984 U.S. Men's Gold Medal Olympic Volleyball Team, served as keynote speaker for the inaugural induction ceremony. A total of 146 men and women from 24 countries around the world have since been inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame. The international appeal of the sport explains a shift in the pool of inductees since 1998. Since that time, inductees have come from around the world and contribute to the honoring of the sport and its home in Holyoke. 15 minutes away. The International Volleyball Hall of Fame provides the opportunity to bring people from different cultures and different parts of the world together to celebrate the sport.

15 minute drive Robinson State Park is a state-owned, public recreation area located mostly in the town of Agawam with a small section in Westfield, Massachusetts. The narrow, 1,025-acre (415 ha) state park follows the course of the meandering Westfield River which forms the park's northern border. The park is managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. The park originated with land donations made to the state for recreational purposes by Springfield businessman John C. Robinson in 1934 and 1937.[4] Robinson was an early proponent of the Eastern States Exposition, which lies one mile east of the park. The riverside had been intended for industrial development[4] when Robinson began making purchases of small parcels in 1920, with the aim of creating an area preserved for recreation. The park has 20 miles (32 km) of trails and paved roads for hiking, cycling, and cross-country skiing. Some trails are accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. A swimming pond and its surrounding beach area draws park visitors during the summer months. Picnicking, canoeing, and fishing are also available.

Sightseeing

The Bridge of Flowers is in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, connecting the towns of Shelburne and Buckland. The seasonal footbridge – once a trolley bridge – has a garden of flowers covering it. It is only open between April and October. THE BRIDGE OF FLOWERS IN Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, is touted as “the only one of its kind in the world.” The 400-foot long bridge is a plant-lover’s paradise, as it’s covered in flowers expertly planted to ensure they bloom continuously from April to October. The bridge’s famous flora includes 500 varieties of flowers, vines, and shrubs, many of the rare or historical varieties. The plants, which hug either side of the narrow walkway across the bridge, are labeled to satisfy the curiosity of interested visitors. The bridge was built for trolleys in 1908. In 1929, after the railway went out of business, the structure was reborn as the Bridge of Flowers. In 1983, it was completely renovated at a cost of a half-million dollars and under the expertise of a local horticulturalist. Today, its upkeep relies on a paid gardener and volunteer help from the Shelburne Falls Women’s Club.
