Neighborhoods

I'm happy to live here...it's good in the hood! This is a fun and funky area of the city that's been revitalized in recent years. There are lots of shops and restaurants leading down to Washington Square and the heart of downtown. Beyond Washington Square is Thames Street. Thames is one-way southbound and runs parallel to Spring Street (one way northbound) and Bellevue Avenue (two-way traffic); it's one of the main traffic arteries in the city, and as such it's given to heavy traffic congestion in the summer months.

Mansions and breathtaking views of the ocean are what everyone knows Bellevue Avenue for. It's dominated by Gilded Age mansions built by the best architects for the captains of industry and the robber barons of the late 19th century. Many of these opulent summer homes, including the Breakers and Marble House, are open for tours. The world-famous Cliff Walk lies between the mansions and the Atlantic Ocean. NB: Be very careful and vigilant of your footing/surroundings on the Cliff Walk: it’s narrow and there are places that people fall from regularly, ie at least once per year. UPDATE: March 2022: a 20-foot section of the Cliff Walk fell into the ocean. Obviously, the path is now closed off for the foreseeable future; the affected portion is just behind Ochre Court, on the Salve Regina University campus. I believe it's still accessible between Forty Steps/Narragansett Avenue and Memorial Boulevard; and on the other side, at Ruggles Avenue, just past the Breakers. www.Newportmansions.org Doris Duke’s Rough Point is worth a visit just for the art and the amazing view from the back lawn as it rolls down to the rocky coastline. www.Newportrestoration.org

I love this place! Although I miss the pre-pandemic live music events, I still go for the food. They have a great brunch and a small but amazing selection of entrees and appetizers, along with daily specials.

Their Greek-style pizza is the best in town! They have awesome grinders (aka subs), gyros, salads, and desserts. It's just up the block if you want to eat in or carry out; they also deliver, but it might take some time to arrive.

So rich, so creamy, so many choices! The menu is posted daily on their website. They have that dairy-free stuff, too, if that's your thing. Close to First Beach. Parking is REALLY limited (like 3 or 4 spaces), so leave it at the beach if you're already parked there.

Free admission to a stunning wildlife preserve. With access to the shoreline, people go fishing and bird watching. There’s a snowy owl that hangs out here sometimes. If you patiently look through the small rocks at the water’s edge, you’re bound to find some sea glass.

This is a War of 1812-era fort that's had lots of work done so it can be open to visitors. When I was a teenager, my friends and I would sneak in and explore--there are listening tunnels under the fort, some of which actually extended across the bay to Jamestown. They're mostly blocked off now, but you can still take a tunnel rat tour! Sensible shoes are strongly encouraged. While visiting, you may have the good luck to see Tall Ship The SSV Oliver Hazard Perry, which sails as Rhode Island’s Official Sailing School Vessel. Fort Adams has a small beach and hosts Sail Newport. On the western side, behind the fort, there's a great view of the East Passage and Jamestown. Also some bunkers and other good spots to explore.

Most visitors tour the mansions and you should too. Why? The visual impressions of the magnitude of wealth held by the captains of industry and robber barons, old money vs new money, is astonishing. Tour guides dish dirt sometimes, too. Not fun for kids.

Ten miles of natural beauty and ginormous homes. Brenton Reef is the most southern point of Aquidneck Island, a rocky and wild reminder of Mother Nature’s unrelenting strength. While people go out on the rocks to explore or catch big fish, I would recommend staying away during high tide. The powerful waves and slippery rocks are extremely dangerous and people are regularly washed away. Brenton Point State Park is a wide-open expanse where people fly kites and picnic. Trails have been cut through the wooded area at the eastern border of the park creating a nice nature walk leading to an observation tower. The old building, now fenced off, was the stable for the estate called The Reef that once occupied the area.

Sachuest Beach in Middletown, also known to locals as Second Beach, is far superior to Newport’s Easton’s (or First) Beach because of an abundant amount of gross red seaweed in the water in most days. Whichever beach you choose, don’t drive a car. Parking is really expensive, if you are even able to park.

No legal issues necessary

We're not crime-free, but still pretty safe; Pay attention to personal safety. Move valuables in your car out of sight, and lock your car: lost drunks wake up in all kinds of places. Seriously. They do. Occasional break-in sprees happen, too. Don’t get yourself a court date by carrying a cocktail down the street. Even if you've camouflaged it in a coffee cup. At 2 am. The NPD is a savvy bunch and you will get busted. I can't bail you out. Sorry. The other big reason people return to our fair city is to stand before a judge is urinating in public. Really. Just don’t.

Pro-tip: bike, scooter, Uber, city bus, heel-toe express

Newport offers transportation options so you can keep your car out of the logjams that are the bane of every summer visitor and local alike. Please, I implore you...be considerate when parking in neighborhoods. While you might not mind paying for a parking ticket, the person with the resident parking sticker will be left without a legal place to park and might get a ticket too. Park in a paid lot for the same price as a ticket and become a hero by spending that money with a local business: bike or scooter rentals, or a pedi-cab from downtown.

Remember that people do live here...

...and their kids play outside, so please be mindful of speed limits and local laws. While it’s really hard to imagine, people die on crosswalks or while riding their bicycles every year in Newport. A few years ago a man in a wheelchair was killed in a crosswalk at the intersection of Memorial and Bellevue! When you've been sitting at the light on Bellevue for 3 cycles and you just want to gun it through that red light...don't. We all feel your pain and curse that light daily. But our community also feels the pain of the families who've lost loved ones to an impatient or reckless driver.

Just a couple of thoughts from your Hostess with the Mostest

Newport has been America’s first resort since Giovanni da Verrazzano sailed in and spent a couple of weeks moored off Aquidneck Island almost 400 years ago. We have survived and prospered through wars, slavery, natural disasters, civil unrest, and Bob Dylan going electric. We have welcomed people from around the world, including royalty, US presidents, movie stars, refugees, runaway slaves, and sailors from far and away.
