Places to See

Flowerpot Island in Fathom Five National Marine Park is the other iconic destination in Tobermory. It is accessible only by tour boats running out of Tobermory (unless you have your own boat). There are several boat companies in Tobermory: Blue Heron, Bruce Anchor and Tobermory Wave to name a few. Note that boat trips often fill up in July and August, so make your reservations well in advance! Also, please don’t plan to paddle your canoe or kayak to Flowerpot Island unless you are a very experienced paddler...this is a dangerous 5 km open water crossing in waters that are cold, deep, and can be rough.

Your cottage is just a one-minute walk from downtown Tobermory and there is so much to do right in and around the village that you hardly even need to use your car. Here are some of the things you can do just walking from the Dragonfly Cottage: 1) Get on a tour boat to Flowerpot Island, for a tour of the shipwrecks in Big Tub Harbour, or for a scenic cruise in Fathom Five National Marine Park 2) Go on a scuba or snorkelling charter to one of the many shipwrecks in the area 3) Rent a kayak and paddle yourself around the shipwrecks in Big Tub Harbour 4) walk to the Parks Canada Visitor Centre (10 minute walk) for displays and information about the park, to climb the viewing tower, or to hike the short trails behind the visitor centre 5) start your hike on the Bruce Trail (the northern terminus of this 800+ km foot path is right in the village of Tobermory 6) check out the local shops 7) hit the local restaurants (lots of options in summer but most are closed in the winter) and bars (the Crow’s Nest regularly has live music in summer) 8) walk down to ‘the Gap’, just a one-minute walk north on Highway 6 to watch the sunset or jump off the rocks into the water (strong swimmers only!) 9) watch the Chi Cheemaun docking or departing, or get on board for a round-trip pedestrian crossing to Manitoulin Island.

Getting around the area

Tobermory and the northern Saugeen (Bruce) Peninsula is a truly remarkable area...we know you’re going to love it as much as we do! Because it’s so special, it’s also getting very popular. There are often congestion and parking issues at many of the popular destinations and in and around Tobermory itself. If you’re able to, we highly recommend getting around as much as possible on foot or by bicycle.

Planning ahead

Because the area is getting so popular, many locations and experiences are fully booked during peak season. You need a reservation to visit the Grotto or Halfway Log Dump, and to secure a parking spot at places like Little Cove or Singing Sands, you often need to arrive early in the morning. Some of this can be avoided by travelling by bicycle. Little Cove, for example, is an easy 30 minute bike ride from the cottage.
