If you've never tried Burmese food, this is a must-have on your trip to the bay area. Definitely try the exotic tea-leaf salad with a blend of crunchy ingredients and tastes unrivaled anywhere (but not if you need a big nights' sleep--lots of caffeine). We also recommend Nan Gyi Dok (chicken noodle curry) and their lamb dishes. There is something here for every palette from mild to spicy and great for vegetarians too. Get there early and give them your number while you browse the local stores, because there is usually a wait to get in.

18 minutes from San Francisco, this BART station is just 7 minutes from our house or a 15 minute bike ride. Easily access other parts of Oakland, Berkeley, the Peninsula or the City from here. Fruitvale BART has an inviting market and beignet cafe.

If you want a larger selection, there is a bigger Farmer Joes up the street at MacArthur and Fruitvale. By far the best local grocer if you plan to cook in the kitchen.
