City/town information

The town of Jaco's basically a two-mile stretch on the main street of Pastor Diaz where you'll find most of the restaurants, bars and night life. While it's easy enough to walk around town, you're better off renting a car if you want to visit the nearby beaches of Hermosa a 15-minute drive, Herredura a 10-minute drive, Esterillos a 30-minute drive or Bejuco a 40-minute drive. Jaco is best explored on foot. The paved sidewalks of Pastor Diaz parallel the beach with its array of shops, boutiques, galleries, cafes, restaurants and bars close to the shore. Beach goers can quickly wander from the beach for a bite or do some shopping while in their bathing suits. Shopping plazas, supermarkets, pharmacies, banks and restaurants are all within walking distance. Taxis are both affordable and quick for local sightseeing. Official taxis are red and come equipped with a meter. It’s always better to negotiate a fare beforehand for any long distance trips. SAMPLE ONE-WAY FARES: Jaco to Playa Hermosa: $10-$15 Jaco to Esterillos: $30 Jaco to Herradura/Los Suenos $15 Jaco to Carara National Park: $25 Jaco to Bejuco: $35 Jaco to San Jose: $90-$100

Markets

Every Thursday from 2pm to 6pm and Friday from 6am to 2:30pm. Located next to the Garabito Clinic. Have you ever wanted to try and taste fruit and vegetables that are 100% natural, organic and free of pesticides. Then I recommend you come and visit Jaco’s Farmer’s Market also known locally as the “Feria”. The majority of the fruits and vegetables are grown relatively close to Jaco. The fruits come from a small town called Puriscal and the majority of the vegetables come from the province of Cartago. If you are a person who loves organic and natural fruit, you will enjoy the variety of delicious watermelons, papayas, pineapples and many more like the local favorite; mamon chino (rambutan) were originally found in Asia but are also grown here in Costa Rica. If you have never had a mamon then you’ll be in for a real treat.

Farmers Market

If you’re staying in town for a while, you might want to consider hitting up the weekly farmers market. Here, you can get the freshest fruits and vegetables as well as artisanal breads, cheeses, and other goodies. The farmers market, or feria as it is called locally, is held every Thursday afternoon and Friday morning off the south end of the main way, Avenue Pastor Diaz. If you’re coming from the center of town, turn right at the Palacio Municipal, then take another right near the Post Office.
