Just around the back of Ford Cottage is Allensford Country Park. There is a great little cafe, kids play park, vast open space alongside the river Derwent. At the end of the park is a great walk through Allensford Woods, with lots of interesting wooden sculptures within. It is a great place to take the kids and walk the dog.

The Derwent Walk is an extremely popular linear route between Consett and Swalwell, with fabulous views across the Derwent Valley. The walk forms part of the C2C. There are bird hides, picnic areas, information and toilets along the way.

Gibside is a National Trust Site, great day out. Look out for their farmers market on some Saturday's and also they convert into a family pub on a Friday and Saturday in the summer, serving great local beers and sometimes they have live music, buskers etc. They also have a pizza place on site too. Great place to explore.
