City/town information

Small rural town North of Coromandel. In pioneering days, Colville was a busy timber milling town. Then in the 1970s it became a magnet for hippies drawn to the natural beauty and isolation of the area. Today Colville is a quiet country town serving a local community of farmers and artists. North of Colville, the road winds along the western shoreline where the Moehau Range (Sleeping Wind) rises steeply from the sea. It is a great place to visit if you are interested in fossicking for gemstones, bird watching and horse riding. The town itself comprises of a cafe with a small shop, the Himalayan shop (open in the summer) and the Hereford 'n' Pickle Cafe as well as the Colville school on the outskirts. There is a cattle sale yard just out of town too!
