Food scene

Donegal food offerings have improved significantly over the past 5 years as evidenced by Ahoy. We have sampled all the seafood offerings on the menu and all were delicious, from moule to fish tacos to crab claws - yum. It is located on the seafront on Killbegs with a nice view over the trawlers.

Good for morning coffee or brunch. It is opposite the petrol station at the junction where you turn off the main road down to Burtonport, but there's a nice view over a lake at the back and dogs are allowed there.

Great local seafood. In a county renowned for selling its catch around the world, it can be surprisingly hard to find good seafood at home. On a recent trip to the Lobster Pot (August 2020) we ordered a range of dishes from lobster and chips, to haddock and prawn crumble, to seafood chowder. All were delicious. The restaurant is interestingly decorated inside. Overall a great experience.

Great coffee in a modern coffee shop / restaurant environment. We didn't manage taste their evening fare (they were booked out) but the menu looked good. Book ahead

Disappointing at first sight (could an architect not have come up with a slightly more interesting design?), but this hotel has fabulous sea views and is well run and comfortable. We have only eaten the bar food, and stuck to the 'Waterfront specials', but can report that the seafood chowder was delicious. Fish and chips also looked very good. Those with young children might like to know that there is a small playground just outside and you can watch your kids playing while sipping Guinness in the bar.

Quaint and quirky seafood bar which was originally an old private house and retains many of the original small rooms. To be honest, much of the food on offer isn't amazing, but the oysters are delicious! I believe they come marinated in the local gin, An dulamain. I'd never had oysters before and was more than a little sceptical about their merits. They were delicious! Its good to have a few oysters and a pint before heading across the road for some live music at the Corner House bar.

Sightseeing

I love visiting Arranmore, and especially enjoy the short ferry journey from Burtonport. Ferries leave approximately hourly (there are two companies - why? - one operating the red ferry, and the other operating the blue ferry). You can travel as a foot passenger, or take your car on board. The ferry is subsidised as it provides a vital service to Arranmore, so it is fairly cheap to take a car across. On the short journey (10-15 minutes?), the ferry passes between the small islands of Rutland and Inishcoo, and the scenery is fab. Once on Arranmore, there are several beaches on the south of the island (the 'harbour side'), 2 or 3 coffee shops and a bar. There is also a nice friendly little playground which is useful for anyone travelling with a toddler. It is also worth taking the 20-30 minute drive across the island to the lighthouse in the north to see the scenery. Arranmore boasts the only off-shore club in Ireland and is the home of an annual music and arts festival, the Swell festival.

An area to park should be visible just to the south of Errigal on the R251. Leave about 3 hours for the round trip and be prepared for some very boggy ground!
