In Two Creeks Plaza, which is right across the street from the building in which our condo is located. One-of-a-kind, locally owned ice cream shoppe. They make their own unique flavors, like Bourbon Vanilla. Especially nice on summer evenings--there is outdoor seating in the middle of the Plaza with trees and strings of lights. Covid-19 note: Service is walk-up now, with a window, so you don't have to go inside to order.

Casual restaurant and bar, owned by several neighborhood families, located right across the street from the condo building. Delicious burgers, salads and drinks, with a blend of seasoned salt for fries, etc. that's so popular they sell it as a take-home item! Great shaded deck that sometimes features live music. Dog-friendly. Kid-friendly. Sports showing on inside TVs. (Andy's favorite menu item is Cooper's Tacos; I like the Slim Shady, a burger in a bowl of salad.) Just writing this makes me wish I was there right now!

A short drive from the condo, CityLine Plaza on State Street is rimmed by several restaurants with outdoor patios. The plaza itself has outdoor tables, fountains and greenery, where the public is welcome to bring picnics. A modern, "urban style" park in the midst of the State Farm complex, it includes Good Union BBQ, Fernando's Mexican Cuisine, a Nestle Toll House Cafe, Top Pot Donuts and seafood options as well. Outside parking is free and free visitor spaces are also located in the adjacent parking garage. The DART rail station is a few steps away if you want to hop on and head to downtown Dallas (about a 45 minute train ride) or historic downtown Plano, just one stop north. In addition, across Plano Road from CityLine Plaza is another CityLine shopping and dining area, that includes Starbucks, Whole Foods Market, Pei Wei and other choices.

A tiny burger joint that's existed more than 50 years, located in old downtown Richardson one block off Main Street-- walk in and it's like stepping back in time. The food is delicious and the ice cold homemade root beer in a frosty mug is also not to be missed. For those that like more modern fare, they offer turkey burgers, veggie burgers and sweet potato fries, too. Be sure to try the fried Twinkie if you've never had one (but take a photo of it beforehand to wow your friends on Instagram!). Right now, the Main Street area is getting a facelift so Del's may be a little harder to get to, but it's worth the wait in case there is a lane closed on Main or Greenville that's delaying traffic.

Located less than two miles from the condo--a unique, small restaurant and bar with occasional live music owned by several Richardson residents (some of them are friends of ours), with more than 20 craft beers on tap made at local breweries in the Richardson, Dallas and Fort Worth area, as well as a few "out-of-staters." And the food is really good too-- they specialize in grilled panninis, subs, flatbread pizzas and lots of good appetizers, including a big bowl of popcorn with truffle oil and Parmesan. Weekly events make it a fun destination for groups, like "Geeks Who Drink" Trivia Night and "Music Bingo Mondays." Owner Rob Baker makes custom guitars in his spare time and many are on display. They also sell T-shirts (and growlers) if you're looking for a good take-home souvenir from your trip! It's also kid-friendly, they have board games on hand and a children's menu.

On the edge of downtown Dallas, connecting the Arts District and trendy Uptown, lies a unique "deck park" (built across the Woodall Rodgers Fwy.) that was named after the young son of energy magnate and park benefactor Kelcy Warren. It has become a fun gathering place, with food trucks along one side, lots of shaded tables and chairs, free outdoor evening movies, Saturday yoga, a children's area, dog park, outdoor stage, butterfly garden and more. Especially beautiful at night, with the surrounding skyscrapers lit up. The Dallas Museum of Art is directly across from the park. Both are free! www.klydewarrenpark.org

When the beautiful Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge was built across the Trinity River Bottom between downtown Dallas and West Dallas (as seen in the photo), the original bridge/street that spanned the divide (right next to the new bridge) was turned into a great, wide pedestrian walkway, complete with modern, molded plastic chaise lounges along the sides, plus tables, chairs, and raised bed landscaping. The views of downtown Dallas are great both day and night, and it's well worth the walk, either halfway across or all the way-- the distance across is 1.2 miles. There is free parking at the bridge's main entrance/parking lot on the west side, at 109 Continental Ave. When you're finished walking, reward yourself with food and drink from one of the many restaurants in Trinity Groves, right across the street from bridge parking. During the pandemic, Babb Bros. BBQ and Blues has been the site where several Trinity Groves restaurants have pooled their menus for a one-stop-shop takeout location, and they also have an outdoor patio as well as spacious indoor seating. http://dallascontinentalbridge.com/

Spas and Salons

Need a manicure or pedicure, massage or facial? I was going to this place long before we bought the condo, and it's right across the street. It's a soothing atmosphere the minute you step in the door, and I think it's worth paying a few dollars more for my pedicure than average because the large nail salons with TVs blaring and toxic smells wafting everywhere are not relaxing in my opinion. The two-person mani-pedi area is in the back and very private, and no one else is ever scheduled while you're there. Racquel the nail tech is great...They offer everyone hot tea, water or a glass of wine upon entering, the music is soothing, even the bathrooms are soothing. I bought my husband a massage here and he loved it. They also offer couples massage, hot stone massage and many other services. www.thespaatiicreeks.com

Outdoors in Richardson

A beautiful shady park that's a short walk from the condo, with many picturesque photo opportunities (and you will probably see professional photo shoots going on while you're there). Locals like it for the creek, waterfall, bridges and trails, both concrete and natural. Picnic tables and benches are found throughout. To get there from the condo, walk one block up to Lookout Drive (there is a sidewalk on Custer Parkway that will take you there), turn left, and about three blocks later, down the hill, the road stops right at the park (and a small parking area). There are some large, beautiful homes that face each side of the park, and the surrounding neighborhood is worth walking in as well.

Beautiful, wooded 100-acre park with both concrete and natural trails for biking and walking, and the wide Spring Creek running through it. Easiest way to access the Area is to park in the Whole Foods parking lot at Renner Road and Plano Road, and walk across Renner, then Plano Road, and you'll be at the park. Just one mile west of the condo. Go north on Custer and turn right on Lookout. Lookout eventually becomes the east entrance to the campus, and continues into the parking area, at Floyd Road. If you're up for a two-mile roundtrip walk to and from the condo, I'd opt for that route if you don't want to look for visitor parking once there (it's hard to find). The walk along Lookout is safe and heads right across the Canyon Creek Country Club golf course. No matter how you get there, once on campus, walk around and check out the interesting architecture of one of the most diverse, fastest-growing universities in the nation. (UTD boasts the highest incoming SAT scores of any of the major universities in Texas!) Visit www.utd.edu to find a map of the campus; must-see stops on your campus walk should include the collection of large moon rocks (yes, REAL rocks from the moon) that are sitting on pedestals, outdoors. If open, the restaurant on the second floor of the student union serves a delicious Dr. Pepper cake; there are chain restaurants a few blocks north on campus including iHop and Einstein Bros. Bagels; and further north, across Synergy Blvd., are several more restaurants. Stop by the Visitors Center on the south edge of campus for even more information.

Neighborhoods

A neighborhood on the eastern edge of downtown Dallas once known for jazz/blues clubs and warehouses/factories, it's now a mix of old and new buildings with enough living, dining, shopping, tattoo parlors, bars and music venues located in the old industrial buildings to give it a very cool vibe. Lots of great murals and other art found in this neighborhood. In non-pandemic times, there's a major artist playing in at least one of the music venues every weekend. For now, it's a great place to walk around and grab takeout food from one of the many places with outdoor seating. See if you can find the Anthony Bourdain mural or the one with baseball legend Nolan Ryan. Parking tip: park in a paid lot or on a street as close to the "action" as possible. Safe at night as long as you don't get too far away where it may not be lighted very well. www.deepellumtexas.com

(This is also in our other Guidebook, Uniquely Dallas): If you're a Baby Boomer or Gen Xer, you can relive your video arcade days, and if you're a fan of "Stranger Things," you can imagine you're with Max and the gang, at this unique indoor entertainment option. Free Play Arcade changed the arcade industry in 2015 with its first location in a Dallas suburb, featuring 100 vintage pinball and video arcade machines, running 100% with original parts and offering unlimited play with one admission fee-- plus a bar and food menu. We took our older kids here and had a blast. Good food and drinks.

Dinner-at-your-seat inside a movie theater was invented in Dallas, and Alamo was Austin's nod to the phenomenon. But leave it to Austin to make it a "hipper" experience, and Alamo's first location in the Dallas area was this one. The Richardson location includes a bar with outdoor seating and fun activities like movie trivia; if you stop there before going in to your movie theater to eat, they'll let you bring your snacks and drinks right along with you. Alamo's menu is really good; I recommend the spring mix salad with fried goat cheese, and the warm cookies for dessert. My husband's favorite is the bottomless bowl of popcorn--they will keep refilling it throughout the movie, whenever you request it (and it's a really big bowl)...

Best place in town for Texas-themed souvenirs, Dallas-themed souvenirs, even Richardson-themed souvenirs. And it's locally owned! Other great gifts too, from whimsical kitchen towels to hand-poured soy candles to unique birthday cards, including some featuring the cast of "Schitt's Creek". The tiny shop is located just east of US 75 on Belt Line Road (a.k.a. Main Street in that part of Richardson); it's in the first block east of 75 so blink and you might miss it (and you might then get into some bad traffic, as the Main Street area is undergoing a renovation!). Just drive slow and stay in the right lane of eastbound Main Street on the approach, you'll be turning right into a small strip of shops with their own parking lot.

I've already mentioned Shady's, Sweet Firefly, and the Spa at Two Creeks elsewhere in this guidebook, but I'm giving a general shout out to Two Creeks Plaza because it's RIGHT ACROSS the STREET from the condo, and because there are even more shops and restaurants there, including a unique shop called Beyond the Door, and a soon-to-open coffee shop. Beyond the Door is not a Best Kept Secret-- the word is out on this very cool locally owned shop, another big draw to Two Creeks that's been there longer than many other surrounding businesses. It features gifts for men, women and children; women's clothing and accessories, home decor, jewelry, candles, kitchen ware, baby gifts, books, bar/serving accessories, and holiday gifts, depending on the season. If you're lucky you'll visit when they're offering free samples of wine or perhaps locally-made salsa (with tortilla chips of course), but not sure they're doing this during the pandemic. And, they'll gift wrap for free.

If shopping is a must-do part of your plans while here, then North Park Center is a must-shop place if you've never been. Historic, sleek and beautiful, it's one of the first malls in America and it's also one-of-a-kind because it's filled with modern art (located both inside and out) from the Raymond and Patsy Nasher collection (Ray's company developed North Park Center). A lot of high-end stores are located here and also a movie theater, food court, several notable restaurants and nice outdoor courtyard. Even if you don't want to shop, it's a nice place to walk indoors. Trivia: Several movies have been shot here, including "Dr. T and the Women" (yes, Farrah Fawcett really did get in that fountain) and David Byrne's "True Stories".
