Sightseeing

Alges is a typical Portuguese town located 20 mins to centre and 20 mins to Cascais with its own beach. We love it as it has plenty of independent shops, cosmopolitan restaurants and its own local beach. The walk to Champalimaud is wonderful and with Belem only a short trip away what could be better? Well serviced by the train and tram it is also the venue for top music festival (1 week July) NOS every year. There are plenty of motor cycles scooters and bikes to hire nearby making it easy to whizz into Belem or further. It really has a fun feel about it and it's well served but just nicely out of the city to make it feel unique. The Mexican, Indian, Sushi, Vegetarian and Madeiran restaurants are brilliant. Fancy seeing an art exhibition, then head to the Angel Palace art museum about 5 mins walk from the apartment. This is our second home and we love it!

I would recommend Sao Martinho do Porto as one of the places I would consider as a typical seaside Portuguese town. It's totally different in environment to the city or built up Algarve, in the fact that it is a seaside town with a horseshoe bay noted for its wide sweeping but safe swimming beach, great for families, couples or singles. It was knicknamed by the Portuguese as the Queen's bidet in the sense that the sweeping horseshoe shape of the bay resembles a bidet in shape! The town has a good range of restaurants, banks, gelaterias and gift shops etc. It is well located for nearby bigger towns of Caldas and Alcobaca. Sao Martinho do Porto has a train station (which takes you to Obidos) and the expresso bus service runs to Lisbon daily and is a popular seaside town frequented by Portuguese and foreigners alike. There is a good boardwalk which you can cycle or walk across to get to nearby town Salir do Porto. It has a calm atmosphere and some great fish restaurants. There is a monthly antiques market and some good Portuguese festas and markets during the Summer. It's a chill out holiday seaside town but not over spoilt by tourism or ugly buildings. The sea front has remained very picturesque, and it really is a lovely seaside town. Local Tips: Local food shop: Intermarche in Sao Martinho do Porto (2.5km from house) Local markets: Sao Martinho do Porto: every morning in the covered marketplace, R. Dr. Rafael Gagliardini Graça, 2460-648 São Martinho do Porto. Caldas da Rainha: every morning, Praca das Frutas. Restaurant: Tasca da Janeca - approx 2km from house. Go out of Rua do Moinho, turn right, follow the road until you see the restuarant on your right. Above the turning to Praia Salgado. Many other restaurants in Sao Martinho do Porto. Bicycle Hire: The following options exist locally: https://bikerent-silvercoast.com/ https://www.e-motionnazare.com/ https://www.facebook.com/BUKABIKE/
