The Vianden Castle is really breath-taking and can be viewed from approx. 500m from The Cottage. Historical background: Vianden Castle is a real magnet for visitors, being one of the biggest and most beautiful feudal residences from the Romanesque and Gothic periods. The castle was built between the 11th and 14th century on the foundations of a Roman castle and a Carolingian refuge and for a long time belonged to the Grand Ducal family, before passing into state ownership in 1977. Since then it has been restored to all its former glory. Today, Vianden Castle is one of Europe’s leading historical monuments. There is a modern, interactive visitor centre in the entrance area.

Beautiful location in the main street of Vianden. Very rich history, don't miss the garden space behind the church itself as it is more historic than the church itself. Official Description: The monastery church was built in the 13th century as an early Gothic two-nave hall church. The Trinitarians ensured the liberation of Count Friedrich III. who was caught in the Fifth Crusade . His son Heinrich I then gave the Trinitarian in 1248 the newly built hospital in town; in the same year they built a monastery on the site with a monastery church. In 1266 it was declared a parish church to replace the castle chapel . In 1644, the medieval choir room in front of the southern nave of the nave, the so-called monk ship, was replaced by a larger choir in Gothic forms. A sacristy was added north of it in 1790. The Trinitarian monastery was closed in 1783. The church was created in the course of the annexation of the forest department to the diocese of Metz parish church for the entire urban area of Viandens and the village of Roth an der Our . After Roth became Prussian in 1815, this town was annexed to the Diocese of Trier. The church contains the tomb of Heinrich von Nassaus , the tomb of Maria von Sponheim - Vianden , a skull relic of the Blessed Yolanda of Vianden and a reliquary with relics of St. Antonius. The high altar was designed in 1758 in the Rococo style by Michael Weiler. The Mother of God and the Joseph altar date from 1729. A statue of St. Josef , who has been at the altar since 1992, dates from the 16th century.

The little but historic St. Peter's Church (Roth an der Our), is up on the hill as you leave Vianden in the direction to Bitburg, approx. 10 minutes from The Cottage. Drive past the Q8 and take the road leading up the hill, first right and it's just about 100m down the road. Historical background: Part of the former Johanniter coming, Romanesque, originally three-aisled basilica on a trapezoidal floor plan, third third of the 12th century, northern side choir with apse probably from the 11th century, arching shortly after 1466, probably at the same time conversion to the stair hall; Window changes and fittings baroque; in the churchyard wall five grave cross fragments from 1636, so-called plague cross, sandstone, allegedly from 1632; Well shaft maybe still medieval, fountain houses younger

Brandenbourg Castle, now a ruin, is located on a promontory some 70 metres above the village of Brandenbourg in north-eastern Luxembourg. It has a history going back to the 9th and 10th centuries when there was a wooden fort on the site. The 13th century keep, now 11.9 metres high, used to have four floors, only three of which remain. In 1668, the French attacked the castle which subsequently fell increasingly into ruin. It is now owned by the Luxembourg State

After the creation of the parish of Vianden on the right bank of the Our around the middle of the 13th century, the Templars of Roth built a chapel for the inhabitants of the left bank attached to their parish. In 1545, a cemetery was built to the left of the church. Following a fire, the sanctuary was rebuilt in 1724. In 1907, Charles Arendt gave the exterior a neo-Gothic character. The altarpiece of the choir with the statue of St Nicolas dates from 1768. The holy bishop is revered as patron of merchants and boatmen. The stone statue of St Jean Népomucène, canonized in 1729, comes from the Our bridge where it has been replaced by a copy. This saint is considered as a protector against the dangers of water and as a model of the confession

Located 30 minutes drive from The Cottage you will find Echternach. Echternach is a very historical and beautiful town with a large square and filled with restaurants, ice cream parlours and historical monuments. Official overview: The historical and cultural center of the Mullerthal Region - Luxembourg's Little Switzerland as well as the oldest city of Luxembourg has retained its medieval ambience: labyrinthine streets, remains and towers of the ancient city wall and a marketplace with a Gothic town house take the visitor back in time. In the center there is a museum of prehistory and at the lake there are the remains of the largest Roman villa north of the Alps, along with a visitor center and a permanent exhibition. The city of Echternach also has a wide cultural offer with a large calendar of events during the summer months: concerts such as Echterlive in July, concerts in September, folklore festivals and flea markets provide a lively atmosphere. The Trifolion is a generously designed cultural and congress center with a sophisticated program. A large recreational area with lake, bike and hike trails and an adventure playground make a visit here worthwhile.

Clervaux is another nice town 30 minutes from Vianden, has a nice square, a small castle and a really lovely Abbey just outside the town which is also a nice drive. I believe the Abbey make their own cider. Description: A locality situated in a deep and narrow valley beside the river Clerve in the inmidst of the Ardennes. The Benedictine Abbey of St. Maurice and St. Maur, built in 1910 in romanesque-burgundian style, dominates the valley. Various historical monuments. In the neighbourhood are some churches (Munshausen, Hachiville, etc.) which have most interesting architecture, furnishings and frescoes. In the "Cité de l'Image", the traditional garden is extended and transformed into an open-air exhibition. Several freely accessible sites offer opportunities to encounter contemporary photography, as well as for contemplation and exchanges. In the feudal castle of the 12th century you will find several exhibitions.

Food scene

Completely original. I found this location the day I bought The Cottage. It's an old cinema remade into a cozy bar. What used to be the ticket venue is now a bar and the cinema itself remains partially in tact with slanted floor and some original seats. I love the fact that they continously play cartoons! Official description: We have always dreamed to run a place where we could simply do things we like. The recipe seemed easy: find an old place with character, pour some jazz into it, mix it with cinema, add cozy furniture from the 60s and serve the top-quality Italian espresso. It was our beloved idea that finally became true. We hope you will like this place, too. When we first saw that abandoned cinema in the middle of picturesque Vianden, we instantly fell in love. That was simply it ! A 200-year old building, full of character and huge potential. The renovation (or shall we say, recreation) lasted more than three years. Ancien Cinéma has been thoroughly reconstructed. While we tried to preserve as many original elements as we could, today you can enjoy a pleasingly refurbished place. Old limestone walls, original cinema seats and antique spotlights are accompanied by cozy sofas, vintage chairs and elegant tables from the 60s. Oversize film snapshots and black & white photos on the walls bring about the sentiment of classic movies.
