Food Scene

My favourite cakes in Edinburgh and very good coffee. Also snacks and breakfasts are great, it is all home made by Alex, the owner. He is a really nice and humble man, we've become friends over 2 years I've known this place for. If you'd want me to show you around the city, remind me of coming to this place and I'm sold :).

Very good Spanish cuisine. Small but cosy place, you should usually find a free table there, but on weekends or especially in summer I would recommend booking a table. Medium expensive. You could spend £50 for 2 people there for tapas and main course, maybe with a beverage. Can go up to £80-£100 if you're a hearty eater and take a whole bottle of wine. Open 5-11 pm, weekends 12.30-11 pm. Last food orders 10 pm. http://www.quijotetapas.co.uk/

Polish-run cafe in great meeting point, with the best coffee in Edinbrugh (my ex-gf is an Italian and she brought me there ;) ) as well as awesome home made food, also vegetarian. Friendly service with nice background music and laid back atmosphere, good for chatting up strangers. Very good place for groups (up to about 10) and family friendly.

Many nice cafes and restaurants on this street. Artisan Roast serve great brewed coffee. Chocolate Tree have very good choc products and ice cream (although I know a better place). This street, however, is definitely not a budget friendly place. But please, don't go to La Barantine - it's quite pretentious, that's unless you want to read your menu and speak to the waitresses in English and French at the same time and pay handsomely for this doubtful pleasure ;).

Sit in or takeway. One of the best pizzas in the city, my personal favourite. Also, this is the place with no. 1 ice cream in Edinburgh. Very friendly service, reasonable prices. Probably the only place with good food where you can order until 1am on a Friday or Saturday night.

Hard to choose a category for this one, they have variety of food in there. Decent quality, normal prices, apparently the owner is not very nice, but the service is. The only reason I put this place on my map is the location - you can sit in-or-outside overlooking empty Meadows in the morning. Good place to chill out or to cure hangover sipping a morning coffee and listening to the chirping of the birds.

Plenty of Middle Eastern, Indian and Asian cuisine around this place, close to the uni. It's very international in here, I definitely like this area for its diversity.

French & Caribbean cuisine. Mario (from Guadeloupe, owner and chef) and Bumba (from Angola, owner, manager and waitress) are a great couple who serve one of the best food experiences I've ever had. I usually like to add heaps of salt to my meals, but Mario's artwork of using herbs makes the dishes too tasty to do this. On 1st Sunday of every month they organise an all you can eat buffet, but you would need to book in advance, since there are usually many people interested in this event. They carry out byob (buy your own booze) policy. It's a bit farther from the city centre, but still a walking distance from my flat (about 25 min). This however has an impact on a decent price you can eat for. I just checked on TripAdvisor, and I must comment: among hundreds of more cosy and/or posh places it has reached #23 restaurant in Edinburgh. It's food and service, I tell you :).

Arts & Culture

Very nice place. Every now and then they organise an interesting event, usually there are some exhibitions there. Adjacent is a very nice bar, a hidden gem, although a bit pricey.

Picturesque location at the Water of Leith, surrounded by green areas. From here you can take a walk on the Water of Leith Walkway via Dean Gardens and go to the Royal Botanic Garden - or vice versa - that's an excellent idea of a full day in Edinburgh. A bus service operates between this gallery, Gallery of Modern Art and Portrait Gallery (drop off only). £1 voluntary donation is requested.

This is a MUST! Very interactive, with games and thinkers for people of all ages. Takes you through fauna, space, geology, industrialism, ethnography, and many more interesting science branches. You can race on a simulator sitting in a real F1 car in there, too! Also, or actually primarily - the Scottish part boasts of several floors of items from Scottish history. Quite an attraction is also a rooftop terrace with its garden, nice place to chill out on a sunny day. There is also a restaurant two floors below the terrace. To see, read and play everything that's in there could take possibly 2 or 3 days. Museum is free and opens daily: 10-17. Current exhibition: Celts, 10 Mar - 25 Sep 2016. Adult £10, Concession £8, Child (12-15) £6.50, Under 12s Free.

Not as cosy as Argyle Bar, but on a rainy day you'd rather run 15 metres back home rather than 50 metres. Plus, they have a TV and show sports events. It gets quite full on such days and it's a nice place to be at if your team is playing.

Iconic Edinburgh Irish Pub. This is a must for Guiness lovers. Also, they host live music events and have a sizable dance floor. With big screen TVs for sports events, this is the place where I got ecstatic when Germany beat Brazil 7-1 in 2014 World Cup ;).

I have decided with my recent guest, that to hike Blackford Hill is much better than Arthur's Seat. If you want to escape the tourist rush and want to sit on green grass with spectacular views far miles ahead (weather permitting), this is the place to go! Definitely for nature lovers, great place to hike, also to walk to the adjacent Braid Hill.
