Edwinstowe is an historic village in the heart of Sherwood Forest, the home of Robin Hood. Legend has it that it was here, at the beautiful medieval church of St Mary, that Robin married Maid Marian. The High Street is home to a statue in their honour. Edwinstowe takes its name from the holy shrine or resting place – ‘’stowe’’ of King Edwin, the Saxon king of Northumbria who was slain in 633AD. He was buried in Sherwood Forest so that his enemies could not lay hands on his body and a small wooden chapel was later erected. The Church of St Mary’s was rebuilt in stone in 1175. This is a vibrant and busy village with a variety of shops, restaurants and pubs. On the outskirts of the village, just past the church, is the Sherwood Forest Art and Craft Centre. Here a you can find a number of craft shops including handmade chocolates, vintage fabrics, jewellery and a cafe. Just a 10 minute walk from the village is the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre and National Nature Reserve, the legendary home of Robin Hood. Many of the oaks in Sherwood Forest have stood for over 5 centuries and the mighty Major Oak (Robin Hood’s tree) is estimated to be over 800 years old. The forest is a Special Area of Conservation and is teeming with life with over 200 different species of spider and 1500 species of beetle along with birds and beasts. There are extensive paths and trails meandering through the woodlands for you to explore. The Sherwood Forest area plays host to a number of attractions including Rufford Abbey Country Park, Thoresby Park, Sherwood Pines and children’s favourites White Post Farm, Wheelgate and the Sherwood Forest Railway. These are all within easy reach of Edwinstowe.

Believed to have been in existence since Anglo Saxon times, this unique market town in the north of Nottinghamshire is aptly dubbed the ‘gateway to the Dukeries’. This influence is even reflected in the town centre. At Bridge Street and Bridge Place – the heart of Worksop’s thriving retail community – coloured stone is set into the paving on the pedestrian streets, depicting the local heraldic crests. There is also a paved maze featuring a heraldic lion and unicorn, giving the town a sense of real historical character. The Augustian Priory of St Cuthbert and St Mary was founded in 1103 and the surviving part consists of the nave, western front and twin towers, built in the late 12th century. Further information about heritage sites in Worksop town centre can be found via the Worksop Heritage Trail.

Situated on the banks of the River Trent, Newark is a picturesque town steeped in history. The ruins of Newark Castle have had a huge influence on the unique character of the town. Though the current remains were built in the early 12th century, there has been a castle on the site since 1068. Left in ruins by a turbulent history, the grounds were landscaped in 1887. Newark’s market place is overlooked by the Georgian Town Hall. The town has become famous for its six annual antiques fairs, held at Newark County Showground, and thousands of antique hunters from across the world descend on the fair’s 4,000 stalls in search of a bargain. Other attractions near the town include the Newark Air Museum – home to 65 aircraft and cockpit sections. Nearby, in North Clifton, is also home to a relaxing meditation center and Japanese garden.

Southwell is arguably one of the prettiest towns in Nottinghamshire. The stunning Southwell Minster is a splendid cathedral with one of the finest Norman naves in Europe and only a stone’s throw from the narrow high street and beautiful pubs. The town played its own role in the English Civil War. King Charles I spent his last night as a free man in Southwell in May 1646, when he stayed in the Saracen's Head. It is also said that Oliver Cromwell later stayed there too. King Charles surrendered to the Scottish Army based at Kelham. Many of Southwell's historic buildings and landmarks suffered during this period, with the Archbishop's Palace and Southwell Minster bearing scars from the conflict as Oliver Cromwell's troops destroyed monuments and graves for lead and other valuable materials. At the end of the war, only the Great Hall still stood in the Archbishop's Palace. The town is internationally renowned for its Bramley Apple heritage. It is here that the apple was first propagated more than 200 years ago from the garden of a cottage on Church Street. Every year people gather in the picturesque market town to celebrate the UK’s favourite cooking apple, at the Bramley Apple Festival.

The ancient market town of Retford was granted its first charter (the right to hold a fair) by Henry III in 1246. This was extended by Edward I in 1275 to holding a Saturday market: a tradition that continues today. The town features fine Georgian buildings, a spacious square, and two theatres – the Little Theatre on Wharf Road and the Majestic on Coronation Street. The town played a remarkable part in the story of the Mayflower Pilgrims, who fled to America in 1620 after being persecuted for their religious beliefs. Explore their story on the Mayflower Trail, a circular tour starting at nearby Babworth. You can also learn all about the Mayflower Pilgrims at the Mayflower Pilgrims Visitor Centre, in the heart of Retford. Markets in Retford are held on Thursday and Saturdays with antique and bric-a-brac market on Fridays.

The award-winning Welbeck Farm Shop is found at the heart of a vibrant artisan food community. Two thirds of the shop’s impressive product range is sourced from or prepared at the historic Welbeck estate, described by the Great Food Club as ‘the capital of Britain’s artisan food and drink movement’. A focus on low food miles, drawing on a rich artisan food tradition, and subjecting every product line to rigorous taste testing has earned a reputation as one of the country’s top farm shops. Meat is sourced from the local area, including from the Welbeck estate where rare breed livestock graze historic pastures. Meats are cured in store by the award-winning butchery team. The estate’s own Raw Milk is also on offer, delivered fresh from the dairy every morning. It’s the same milk used in the internationally acclaimed ‘Stichelton’ blue cheese, which is made just down the road. A cheese counter developed with help from their friends, Neal’s Yard Dairy, is lovingly tended by an in-house cheesemonger. The Welbeck estate is a haven for artisan food producers, also among this idyllic community are Welbeck Abbey Brewery and Welbeck Bakehouse. All grace the farm shops shelves, complemented by some of the finest produce the region has to offer. Welbeck Farm Shop is located in the Courtyard at Welbeck and accompanied by The Harley Café, The Harley Gallery and The Portland Collection.

Situated in The Courtyard at Welbeck on the historic Welbeck estate, the award-winning Harley Gallery shows contemporary exhibitions by leading artists. Exhibitions change five times a year, and range from ceramics to photography. The Portland Collection, alongside The Harley Gallery, displays works of art from Welbeck’s significant historic collection, which has been amassed over more than 400 years by the Dukes of Portland and their families. It showcases treasures ranging from full-length oil paintings by great masters to one of the largest privately-owned collections of miniatures. The collection also includes books, letters, silverware, ceramics and furniture. The Courtyard is also home to the gallery shop, which specialises in contemporary craft from leading names and emerging makers, and the award-winning Welbeck Farm Shop and The Harley Café. Additional activities range from events, talks and open art studios to guided tours of the State Rooms at Welbeck Abbey. There are also practical workshops for adults within the Harley Studios, arts clubs for children of all ages, plus a children’s activity area within The Harley Gallery.

Green's Windmill in Sneinton was built by the father of notable scientist and mathematician George Green in 1807. Today the working Mill is a popular museum and science centre, which teaches new generations of children about the valuable work of George Green. Sadly, the mill was badly damaged by a fire in 1947, but was later restored by Nottingham City Council in the 1980's. The windmill began milling again in December 1986 and the giant sails can still be seen working to this day. George Green was a mathematical genius who developed new ways of doing mathematics, which have helped scientists to understand the world around us. Test your brain power with the hands-on experiments in the Science Centre which explore electricity, magnetism and light, ideal for young children.

After a visit to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem you'll soon understand why this pub has survived the centuries to become a treasure of Nottingham past and present. As England's oldest inn, the pub is nestled beneath the cliff on which Nottingham's historic castle stands, and was once a well-known pit stop for crusader knights. It is said that King Richard the Lionheart and his men are more than likely to have gathered at this historic royal dwelling before journeying to Jerusalem in 1189AD, thus giving the pub its unusual name. Something of a cross between an inn and a museum, the pub features several bars, cosy nooks and snug lounges filled with curiosities and relics of Nottingham's history. You can enjoy a delicious pub meal everyday between 11am and 10pm in the Rock Bar, where you can warm up next to the fire in Yorkie's Lounge, or enjoy the expansive garden area when the weather is pleasant. Beneath the pub, cave cellars root deep into the sandstone cliff and, like many of Nottingham's 800+ caves, have for centuries been used for storage of ale. Also located in the cellars is an old cockfighting pit and part of the Castle Gaol was said to be housed in the cellars at one time. This included the condemned cell, a small cell with a very low ceiling with small holes drilled to allow a little air to flow through. The Gaoler would have sat just outside the cells on the ‘Gaoler’s Chair’ which was etched out of the rock and can still be seen today. Whether you are simply after a refreshment while you drink in the history of Nottingham, or are looking to sample some choicest fayre as you contemplate the wealth of heritage around you, you will find a cosy nook, lounge or bar room at The Trip to suit your needs. So come along, take a step back in time and soak up this piece of England’s colourful, and sometimes bloody, past!

The Old Salutation Inn, dating back to 1240, and therefore officially the oldest public house in Nottingham. Originally named Ye Olde Salutation Inn – ‘Angel Gabriel Saluting the Blessed Virgin Mary’, but often shortened to just ‘The Old Salutation Inn’ with it being mouthful, it was renamed ‘The Soldier and Citizen’ in the mid 17th century when Cromwell’s Puritan movement wanted no connection to any biblical reference. The caves under the building date back to the 9th century and were part of a Saxon farm that later was used for servants accommodation and Brewing. The pub is predominantly a traditional rockers and bikers meeting place which firmly established itself in the 1950’s when Rock n roll reared it’s ugly, yet appealing rebellious head. The ‘Sal’was the first to embrace the alternative scene accepting outcast factions and still does to this very day, where everybody is welcome no matter how different he or she may be or which circles they move in.

There is wide a variety of accommodation available for overnight stays and with good transport links it is a popular destination for a day trip. The Matlock Bath Illuminations are a popular feature from September to the end of October, when the riverside is decorated and the cliffs floodlit to create a magical scene of colour. At weekends there are parades of decorated boats, entertainments and, on certain dates, firework displays. Things to do; An exciting cable car ride takes you up to The Heights of Abraham, where the wooded country park is crowned with the Victoria Prospect Tower. The Great Rutland and Masson Caverns are former lead mines that have been adapted as show caves. The Grand Pavilion houses a Tourist Point and the Peak District Mining Museum. Ordinary House, Extraordinary Home Step back in time to the 1920s and discover how a grocer's family lived in a Midlands market town through their furnishings and household objects. The modest semi-detached house at number 7, Blyth Grove has remained virtually unchanged since the Straws moved here in 1923. For over 60 years they threw little away and chose to live without many of the modern comforts we take for granted today. Treasured possessions and ordinary domestic items can still be seen exactly where their owners left them in number 7, while number 5 provides space for displaying objects normally hidden inside drawers and cupboards. Outside, the lovingly tended garden and orchard includes a greenhouse housing Walter Straw's cacti collection and various fruit trees once used by the family to make preserves and other recipes.

With peeling paintwork and overgrown courtyards, Calke Abbey tells the story of the dramatic decline of a country house estate. The house and stables are little restored, with many abandoned areas vividly portraying a period in the 20th century when numerous country houses did not survive to tell their story. Discover powerful stories of a family who amassed a vast collection of hidden treasures. Visit the beautiful, yet faded walled gardens and explore the orangery, auricula theatre and the kitchen gardens. Escape into the ancient and fragile habitats of Calke Park and its National Nature Reserve.

In 2013 The Old School Tearooms was taken over by Paul and Maryse Lambley, The Tearooms was reonvated to make it more homely and welcoming whilst keeping the character of the 1930's school. Offering a choice of breakfast, light lunches and specials. For a more traditional approach we have a selection of freshly baked scones, to accompany afternoon tea or cream tea. It doesn't just stop with tea we are proud to say we serve Illy Coffee, perfectly prepared by our trained baristas who offer a warm welcome and an enjoyable stay.

Arrow Farm Shop is a family run business and is one of the few farm shops situated in the heart of a modern working farm. We are located on the border of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire – three counties with a vibrant agricultural industry. This key location enables us to provide a wide range of excellent, locally grown produce. The farm itself has been in operation for almost 100 years and has been worked on by four generations of the Blagg family who still operate the farm and the farm shop today. The interior of the Café Diner has been designed specifically to create a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere with stunning views of the countryside. It is a great place to enjoy the very best food and drink from local producers. The quality ingredients in our dishes come directly from the bakers, the butchers or the Farm Shop.

The Harley Café is run by Welbeck Farm Shop, focusing on local fine foods and the very best ingredients. From light bites to bigger plates, there’s something to satisfy every appetite. The building dates from 1893 when it was built as part of the Victorian gas works. The ‘Lime House’ was used in the purification process of the gas, which was then stored in large, circular gasometers.
