Natural, cultural and historic attractions in the Bled region.
This is a lovely medieval castle built on a precipice above the town of Bled, overlooking Lake Bled. The views from the castle over the lake and town to the mountains beyond are really spectacular. You have to pay an entrance fee to get into the grounds of the castle, but it is well worth it. The museum in the castle is really interesting and there is a blacksmiths forge, old printing room and a small chapel. Throughout the year, but especially in the summer months, the castle hosts numerous interesting events.

Bled Island is a tiny tear-shaped isle in the middle of Lake Bled. Most famous one is the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary, a Baroque church containing fresco fragments from the 15th century. The usual way to reach the island is by taking a trip on the Pletna boat, which is a large gondola-like row boat with a canopy that takes visitors from the shores of Lake Bled to Bled Island. There are regular departures throughout the day and it takes about 20 minutes each way. It costs €18 for a roundtrip to Bled Island and this includes waiting time of 30 minutes so you can explore the island and the church. Another option is to rent a rowboat.

Vintgar Gorge or Bled Gorge is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary places to visit in Slovenia. This stunningly picturesque gorge with turquoise water of the Radovna river and a spectacular waterfall at the far end is part of the Triglav National Park and is located just outside the northern side of Bled. It has been made into a huge attraction by the addition of walkways alongside and across the river. Some say it is ‘too touristy’, but there is a reason a place is ‘too touristy’ and that reason is because the place is so incredibly beautiful. Why should not as many people as possible enjoy it? The walkways are well kept and very accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels. The walk is a little less than two hours long and is really not difficult by any standards. There are many families there with small kids and several more active elderly people who seem to manage the walk fine.

Pericnik Waterfall is a well-known waterfall in Slovenia and is part of the Triglav National Park. There are actually two waterfalls: the Upper Pericnik Waterfall, which is 16 meters (52 feet) high and the Lower Pericnik Waterfall, which is 52 meters (171 feet) high and is usually simply known as The Pericnik Waterfall. The unique thing about Pericnik is that you can walk behind the waterfall, and if you don’t mind being sprayed with mist, you can descend right down to the pool at its base. Just make sure you wear a waterproof jacket or at least a hoodie. The waterfall is also well worth seeing in winter when it turns into innumerable icicles and floes in delicate shades of blue and green.

Lake Jasna is a small, aquamarine lake just south of the alpine resort of Kranjska Gora. The Julian Alps dominate the scenery and on a clear, sunny, calm day the water looks like a piece of glass reflecting everything so perfectly. On a boulder by the lake stands the dark bronze statue of the Zlatorog, or Goldenhorn – the magical stag believed to guard the ridges around the lake. Don’t forget to take a photo or two! The circular walk that wraps around the lake is pleasant with plenty of places to sit and enjoy the remarkable mountain views and fresh air. The path is very manageable for pretty much anyone and suitable for strollers. There is a lookout tower which you can climb up to the top for some fantastic photos of the views, thought the ladders are a little steep.

Loosely translated as ‘Big Mountain’ or ‘Great Highlands’, Velika Planina is a high-elevation Alpine settlement of 63 traditional herdsmen’s huts located at an elevation between 1,500 and 1,666 metres in the heart of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps in northern Slovenia. It’s easily accessible to 1,418 metres by cable car – from the village of Kamniska Bistrica, about 10 kilometres north of the town of Kamnik and less than half an hour drive from Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana. The journey to the top comes into two stages, first a fascinating cable-car ride on the fourth-longest unsupported cable car in the world and then a 15-minute chairlift (it operates irregularly) or a 30 minute walk on a gentle slope – it’s a very pleasant walk, but not really suitable for people with mobility issues. Simply follow the signposts up the hill for about two kilometres and you’ll reach a highland plain filled with 63 low-slung, shingle-roofed dwellings enclosed within neat fences.

Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital, is considered to be a yet undiscovered gem of Europe. It is often compared with Prague due to its beautiful architectural appearance, which is the result of the legacy of different periods in history. Buildings are beautiful with different colors and ornaments. There are fountains and statues around almost any corner you turn. There are shops, cafes and restaurants for you to stick your head into and decide if it’s somewhere you want to go in. The Ljubljanica River runs right through the middle. The whole area is a pedestrian zone, so you can walk around without fear of getting run over by a car. Walking along the Ljubljanica River with restaurants, shops and a lively outdoor market is a pleasant way to spend a few hours. There are squares where people gather and musicians play. Plus, there’s a castle that overlooks the entire Old Town that you can see from anywhere you go.

The village of Brezje is arguably the most renowned pilgrimage destination in Slovenia and is known for its Basilica of Mary Help of Christians which attracts numerous visitors. The glory of Brezje began in the nineteenth century, following several miraculous healings that took place at the painting of Mary Help of Christians. With over a century of tradition (it was officially opened for business in 1909), Murka is one of the longest running traditional Slovenian restaurants in the Bled area. It is a very popular place with locals and their families, not just tourists. It is 5 minutes walk from Bled centre in the direction towards the Bled castle. The restaurant has a rustic feel about it and is split into a few rooms. The covered outdoor seating of the terrace is a great place to dine in summer. The food is a mix of super-authentic Slovenian traditional dishes and a barbecue grill. Very tasty dishes and hearty portions. Offers good-value lunch specials for around €6. Staff is very friendly and welcoming and speak a number of languages. Can offer good recommendations too. Very good value for money and the authentic feel of this place really adds to the eating. Extra offerings at Murka include schnapps (try the blueberry schnapps, it’s lovely) and wine tastings, and medieval meals.

Restaurant Lectar is a lovingly decorated homey restaurant, serving a selection of delicious Slovene cuisine and wines. An over 500-year-old house stands on the medieval square in the centre of Radovljica, in which the Lectar restaurant has been operating since 1822. The food is so inviting to the eyes and tastes so darn good! The service is excellent and the restaurant is so cozy and welcoming, conveniently divided into several rooms and decorated with care and love. A must see here is museum in the basement, where gingerbread hearts and other products are still made from gingerbread in keeping with a time honoured tradition. Folk music and dancing is arranged most evenings for some light entertainment for the restaurant’s guests. A lovely dining experience in every way.

Grajska Plaza is a lovely little restaurant perched on the north bank of Lake Bled in the heart of the Castle bathing complex under the Bled castle. It is one of our favorite places to eat in the Bled area. With a pretty wooden deck that overlooks the lake as well as free Wi-Fi, it’s the perfect place to sit back and enjoy the view. A great menu of delicious dishes is found, covering everything from light lunches to Mediterranean and Slovenian specialties and much in between, with plenty on offer for vegetarians as well. The Grajska Plaza is also an excellent place to head if you want to sit with a beverage and admire the views. Prices are reasonable for Bled and worth the money!

Yes, you’ll find a McDonald’s in the Bled area. It includes a restaurant, a McDrive and a McCafé. McDonalds is a well renowned fast food restaurant with more than 30,000 McDonald’s restaurants in over 120 countries around the world. When traveling, most people try not to head for the familiar fast-food places of home, preferring to eat at local restaurants and sample the local cuisine. But, every now and then, it’s nice to slip in to a familiar place. And if you wonder how the food in the McDonalds Lesce tastes compared to back home, well, it is exactly the same. It’s a McDonalds, they are all the same, anywhere you go in the world (which is not necessarily a bad thing).

Visit Bled Island by a traditional Pletna boat

You can ride on the lake and to the island in various ways, also on a traditional boat called pletna. Pletna boats are made by locals and are typical of Bled. Their origins date back to 1590. You should be able to recognize it from afar as it is equipped with a colourful awning which protects passengers from the sun and other weather conditions. The Pletna boat is 7 metres long and 2 metres wide and it ensures safe navigation for 18 people. The boat is propelled with the special »stehrudder« technique where the oarsman is standing and rowing with two oars.

Take a ride with Bled coachmen, known as fijakers!

Fijakers or cabs are open carriages with a long tradition in Bled. Initially, they drove pilgrims, and after the railway construction they transferred guests from the railway station to the desired destinations in Bled.
