Barbarestan is a family restaurant. Diners are welcomed by one of the members of a huge (10 children) family and most of them are involved in the restaurant business. The restaurant allows both visitors and Georgians alike to rediscover forgotten treasures of the country’s heritage: the pumpkin patties and cherry soup with mint are our favourites. One word of warning: the restaurant doesn’t serve any beer, but does offer a wonderful selection of kvevri wines, fitting given that the basement is an original 19th century wine cellar; wine is also available by the bottle to go. Live retro Georgian music on Saturday nights from 20:00 to 22:00. Essential: don’t leave Tbilisi without visiting.

Renowned Georgian chef and culinary expert Tekuna Gachechiladze claims her restaurant specialises in healthy, “Georgian, anti - hangover cuisine.” Walking into this warmly lit and simply furnished establishment will make you feel instantly at ease, and the kitchen in plain site lends a degree of familiarity and friendly comfort to the atmosphere. Though the menu is not large and the price tag not small, choose from a number of exquisitely prepared dishes influenced by European and Georgian cuisine. The chef herself recommends khinkali soup as the perfect solution to an aching head. The restaurant opens at 8 on weekends and stays open until 2 in the morning.

Shavi Lomi is a legend on the Tbilisi dining scene, not all that big a surprise given that the food here is simply delicious. The cuisine is Georgian fusion and includes treats such as beef in Saperavi wine and beef stew in pomegranate sauce. Another interesting dish, not particularly popular in Georgia, is couscous. As a starter we recommend the Tushetian guda board, and as dessert, homemade apple pie. Their house wine is worth trying too.OpenOpen 12:00 - 24:00

Founded in August 2014 Bassiani marked the beginning of a completely different attitude towards nightlife in Tbilisi. The club is located in the basement of Dinamo Stadium, is spacious but somewhat sombre, and strictly forbids flash photography. It's the first venue in Tbilisi that regularly invites acclaimed techno musicians from around the world, and while Bassiani doesn't have regular opening hours (that would be just too mainstream) it usually announces upcoming events (on its website) well in advance. Admission varies from event to event. To be able to purchase tickets on presale it's necessary to first register

Mtkvarze – which means on the river Mtkvari - is located in the building of a former fish restaurant, quite famous in the town during the 1950s. Just two months after opening it won Best Venue at the Georgian electronic music awards. Mtkvarze usually operates with two rooms. The bigger one is oval shaped and its windows from floor to ceiling overlook the river running under. Mostly local DJs play here - mainly techno or house - every weekend. Mtkvatze is a little away from the centre but very easy to reach by taxi, and worth the trip.OpenFri, Sat 23:00 - 10:00 Edit

Also called the Mother Fortress of Tbilisi, Narikala is an ancient symbol of Tbilisi’s defence. The fortress was established in the 4th century, around the period when the city itself was founded. It was then known as Shuris-tsikhe (Invidious Fort). The name Narikala is said to derive from a Persian word for citadel, but another theory says was the name that Mongols used, meaning “little fortress”. It was expanded considerably by the Arabs during the 7th and 8th centuries. The Arabs built the Emir’s palace within its walls. King David further extended the Builder the fortress in th 11th century

Shopping

This extraordinary flea market will keep you entertained for hours. There is a mesmerising assortment of antiques, jewellery and bric-a-brac on sale. In the tough days of Perestroika and the early years of independence, the Dry Bridge is where hard-up citizens of Tbilisi would come to sell their possessions in order to make a little cash. For some people that is still the case today, though for others this is their main business. Everything is laid out on the ground, often carefully arranged on on sheets of material, other times it is a haphazard collection
