The confederate memorial was erected in our pasture in 1903 with funds raised from private citizens to remember the 104 young men of the Monroe Guard who marched off to help to defend their home state, were assigned to the Va. 27th Infantry, and became, after the first battle of Bull Run, part of the Stonewall Brigade. Only three returned after that long sad war to a different state.
