Be cautious of soft sand
You can visit the desert in almost any vehicle but it will limit access to some special sights in the area. Stay in the ecnter of dirt roads when possible as it is the easiest to drive in. Avoid soft sand when possible but if not, do not stop in it!
Hill's Towing will rescue you if you're stuck but it will cost you...

The Desert get very cold... and very hot!
Close-toed shoes for walking anywhere there's dirt
Sweatshirt AND jacket for high-season months (October-May) It gets down to the 30's in winter, sometimes colder and we also get SNOW! The winds will amplify the cold, so hats and gloves are nice too if you'll be outdoors at night.
Sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, shirts with sleeves for summer months. It gets blazing hot here in summer, with most days being in the high 90's to even 110!
Drink a LOT of water in summer months (minimum 1 gallon per day, per person!) The risk of dehydration is very real in summer and can be easily avoided.
