Neighborhoods

Rivierenbuurt is a beautiful neighborhood, with long, stately avenues and the best examples of Amsterdam School architecture in the Netherlands. Guests can use the picnic tables next to the canal in front of the building and watch the boats go by. There are two parks with playgrounds -- the Beatrixpark and the Sarphatipark -- nearby, and the studio is a short walk to the many restaurants, shops, and cafes in Rivierenbuurt, De Pijp, and Old South. The famous Albert Cuypmarkt in De Pijp is a 10-minute walk, and it takes only 20 minutes to walk to the Museumplein, where all the major museums (such as the Van Gogh Museum) are located. There is also an amazing public pool, the Mirandabad, about a 15-minute walk away. It has indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a huge water slide. If you are into history, note that Rivierenbuurt is the old Jewish neighborhood where Anne Frank grew up. Her childhood home -- she did not move to the “famous” Anne Frank House until she was nine -- is at Merwedeplein 37-2, a 10-minute walk from the studio. You will see four small bronze plaques in front of it, marking the deportation and murder of Anne and three other members of her family. Her primary school, Anne Frank Montessori 6e, is two blocks away on Niersstraat. Our daughter goes there.

You might think hummus isn’t a meal. You’d be wrong! The best hummus in Amsterdam, with everything from the tahini to the pita made daily on the premises. Very inexpensive, to boot. You can also get falafel nearby at Sir Hummus Kitchen on Ruysdaelkade 181.

Sightseeing

This is the apartment Anne Frank grew up in. (She hid in the famous Anne Frank House.) Very few tourists know it exists, much less visit it. You can find the small gold stolpersteins (plaques) marking the deportation of Anne and her family in front of the building, and there is a small statute of Anne in the park.
