People Watching

The North Beach-House, below our home is a great place to mingle, picnic, enjoy a Snack, Drink, Popsicle, and to rinse-off sandy feet and swim-suits. You will find live music playing most days, Hammocks, Volleyball nets, and Sundry rentals. This is a good landing pad to slip out of your shoes, and stroll across the beach sand. Winding along the shore is a Dual Bike/walking path wander south to downtown along the shore, and north as far as the Zoo, and then up to Wind Point Light-house. A bit north is a Wetland Preserve, and past that is the Racine Zoo. Across from the main Zoo Entrance are free public tennis courts, and a Convenient Station which sells bait. To the South is The Water Utility which consistently provides some of the best tap water in America. Eastward is a pier, Boat Launch, and Yacht-club, while further south is the river where Racine was discovered and first settled. Mornings are quiet with waves and walkers, as the sand is groomed, and Life-Guards arrive for duty. Enjoy the coastline any time of year, but expect colorful, friendly faces in abundance in the summer season. The lake water is clean, and cool, and shallow as the sand transitions in a gentle slope. Wading in this blue wave beach is a great way to quench and cool off.

Food scene

What can be said of a Kewpee Burger. They are smashed fresh to order, as they have been for nearly 80 years. This is one of the first chains in the nation, and although large buildings, Parking ramps, and commerce have straddled this tiny joint over the decades, this staunch ally of the Burger World has outlasted every neighbor. Order a Kewpee Burger, and note that it is wrapped in paper even if you enjoy it at the counter. Try the home-made root-beer, Add hand-scooped ice-cream for a "Root-beer Float" known in these parts as a "Black-Cow". The fries are plentiful, thin and crispy. The Burgers are neat tidy, Juicy, and fresh. Adorning the walls are memorabilia form eras of Kewpee's evolution. No Omnivore should miss this one. It is a national icon, and a great place for a midday snack. Cash Only, Closed Sunday.

Cultural Destination

Nobody can restrain a smile when the R.A.M. holds it's "Peeps" exhibit. People of all ages and skills create art from the notorious marshmallow Candy few over 7 enjoy around Easter. The R.A.M. as it is known has a spectacularly broad collection of Folk, Craft, and Textile art, as well as a deep collection of local, international Painters, Photographers, and Sculptors. RAM has something in their collection even for art-shy skeptics -- But if you cannot find anything you like you may merely enjoy the plastic clad building, a clean bathroom, and and it's well curated gift shop.

Sightseeing

Any season you will find the shoreline lovely, but a vintage lighthouse and life-boat launch is always a spectacle. Tours can be arranged, and a walk up the lighthouse steps lends a great view of the coastline, and a giant fresnel lens, from a by-gone era. This peninsula has sighted, saved, and stood upon a rocky coastline for over a century, and it is a lovely point upon the end of a great public 9 Hole golf course, known as Shoop Park Golf Course. Officially located in Wind Point Wisconsin this is a short bike ride, a long walk, or a quick drive along the shore from our cottage.

Reliable Bar or Restaurant

Dating back to 1891 this very vintage pub, eatery, and flophouse, has a deep history. Originally serving Bohemian Beer from Chicago, the Pub was purchased by The Pabst family and Bear dynasty, who opened several branded Beer Halls across the midwest. Notable about the Ivanhoe is its vintage feel, kind people, decent bar fare, dartboards, pool, pinball, and Lamps dating to the early 1800's. This place is a special time capsule once owned by a retired Prize-fighter, and later undergoing a few changes, while never losing it's soul. Live music is found here, and locals chat it up loudly over decent drinks, and local beer. The Ivanhoe is a great apostrophe at the north boundary of the Main Street shopping strip. If you need another place, head a block south to the Racine Brewing Company for a reliable fresh craft beer, and a friendly staff.
