The coastal towns of Stonington and Deer Isle, linked by bridges to the mainland, are bastions of lobster and stone.
For generations, Stonington has hosted a giant lobster fleet – more than 300 boats in all. More lobster – in terms of pounds – is landed in Stonington than at any other Maine port. But even as fishing flourished here, another industry was carved out of the region’s islands. Granite was blasted and hauled up from quarries on Deer Island and from smaller islands nearby in Penobscot Bay. Although that huge industry has faded, granite is still mined in the area.

Acadia National Park is a 47,000-acre Atlantic coast recreation area primarily on Maine's Mount Desert Island. Its landscape is marked by woodland, rocky beaches and glacier-scoured granite peaks such as Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the United States’ East Coast. Among the wildlife are moose, bear, whales and seabirds. The bayside town of Bar Harbor, with restaurants and shops, is a popular gateway. It's about an hour drive from our home.

Roughly half of Isle au Haut consists of private residences, but most of the southern part of the island is designated national park land. It's accessible via ferry from Stonington.
