Food scene - West Randolph St and Fulton Market

These are our favorite and fantastic places near Chicago's restaurant mecca - West Randolph Street and the Fulton Market
If you’ve never tried it, there’s a place on west Randolph street called Girl and the Goat. The chef was one of the TopChef TV show winners several years ago. She’s amazing! It’s pricey, but it’s one of a kind and the food is incredible. Gotta try the wood oven roasted pig face and the braised pork shank. You’ll think you died and went to heaven. https://girlandthegoat.com

Across the street from Girl and the Goat is a place called La Josie... really good Mexican food. It has traditional Mexican food, but with a twist. For example, sometimes they put strawberries in their guacamole... and it's AMAZING. A friend of ours own the place. Lobster tacos and a huge mezcal bar!!! Try the ceviches (all three kinds)!!! https://www.lajosie.com

Oh, for burgers, you gotta try Kumas Korner. Burgers are excellent! Expensive, but really good. The atmosphere is kinda loud... they play heavy metal rock really loud and show bizzare slasher movies on their tv screens. In Chinatown, this is a great place for Dim Sum. They have an excellent menu, the food is fantastic and it's affordable. No reservations and there is a wait if you go during busy hours (Sundays, around noon), but it's really fun. After your food, take a walk around Chinatown (just a few square blocks) to check out the scene. Lots to do there. To get there, easiest way on public transportation is to take the Green Line CTA train through the Loop to the Cermak stop and walk two blocks west to Chinatown. The Red Line train also stops nearby as well. Or Uber it... about 15 minutes.

This is our latest super-fun regular pasttime... hanging out on Chicago's Riverwalk, and it's another 'must-do" if you're in the city. The 1.25-mile long path has been constructed in phases over time and includes four distinct districts; The Confluence, The Arcade, The Civic, and the Esplanade. The Chicago River is a treasured natural amenity in the urban canyon of world famous architecture and the Chicago RiverwaIk allows a close proximity to the waterway. The continuous path from Lake Street to the lake front also allows a vertical connection from Upper Wacker Drive down to the waterway. To get there from our place, take the Green Line CTA train to Clark/Lake stop and walk one block north to the river, then down the steps. Park yourselves somewhere at one of the pubs, restaurants or parks and just chill and watch the boats float by. It's great people-watching, and there are plenty of places to visit surrounding the river for food, drinks or entertainment. Food scene - PIZZA

Ok, for Chicago deep dish, there are two “types”... regular bread-style crust and cornbread crust. For regular crust, the most iconic place is Gino’s East which is downtown off Michigan Ave. It’s really good stuff. Classic cheese all over the place, fantastic sauce and toppings. The cornbread crust place to go is Lou Malnati’s. It’s a chain and there are locations nearby and they can deliver to our place, but if you want the experience, you need to go to one of their first restaurants which are in the River North area, called Pizzeria Uno or Pizzeria Due. Same pizza as Lou Malnatis, but these are the real deals... amazing pizza. Cornbread crust with toppings of your choice and then sauce on top. Really unique and awesome pizza. When I lived in the burbs, they put a Lou Malnatis down the street from my house and I think my property value went up because of it. If you want to skip the deep dish and get Chicago style thin crust, there’s a place close by called Tortorices that has great thin crust za. They’ll deliver to our place.

Exercise and Activities

OK, this is the 606. The 606 runs along the Bloomingdale Trail (1800N) for 2.7 miles between Ashland Ave (1600W) and Ridgeway (3750W). It used to be a freight line for trains many years ago and sat unused for a long time. ]Mayor Rahm Emanuel turned it into one of the nicest public areas in the city for biking/running/walking. There are 12 access points, approximately every quarter-mile, with a total of 17 access ramps, all of which are accessible to people with disabilities. The best way to get to The 606 is by foot, bike or The CTA. If you're into outdoor activities like this, you need to check it out. There are several places to jump on the trail. The closest jumping on point for our location is to drive/Uber/bus up Western Avenue to Bloomingdale Ave. (5-10 mins from our place). Or just take an Uber to one of the end points on the trail to walk or run the entire route. It's a beautifully landscaped, scenic path that everyone enjoys. You can run/bike/walk for a while and then take an offramp to get a coffee, cocktail or eat something at one of Wicker Park's fine restaurants. https://www.the606.org/ There is a downloadable map on this website.

Of course, Macy's is the famous store on State Street that has everything for you, and three blocks in all directions are dozens of other stores to check out. Take the Green Line train to the State/Lake stop and it drops you off right next to the building.
Block 37 is a shopping mall in the Loop across the street from Macy's and has great stores and a movie theater. Banana Republic and Zara are there, and they have a great set of food court type restaurants. Take the Green Line train to the State/Lake stop. Less than 10 minutes from our place. Or, take an Uber or Lyft. https://www.blockthirtyseven.com/
