It would seem obvious why I would recommend the National Mall to travelers coming to the DC area seeing as it’s the image of DC most people have in their head when they think of the nation’s capitol. That’s the image of the intricately sculpted design of the dome-shaped Capitol Building, the sprawling grass lawns lined on either side with museums and other federal buildings, and, of course, the Washington Monument, which will be another place I urge travelers to visit in my recommendations. The great thing about my listing is the ease in which one can reach this attraction by car or public transportation; my complex is just off the one main freeway that actually goes right into DC and the National Mall! Also, there’s a bus outside my complex that goes to a metrorail station 5-10 minutes away, and while the DC Metro (WMATA) has its issues, the system is quite easy to navigate and gives riders direct access to nearly every tourist and work destination in the area. Use me as a resource for tips on getting around; I’ll always be available by phone or text!

First thing to note - ALL Smithsonian Institution museums are free to enter, and this museum is one of the most popular and iconic, hands down. The Air and Space Museum houses authentic air and spacecraft created throughout history on display up-close and personal. Visitors can see aircraft and their technological advances from the era of the Wright Brothers through today and get right next to them. The Space section has the actual first lunar lander on display, and visitors can also tour the inside of a space station. Those were just a few examples amongst a multitude of amazing things to see inside that museum, and I definitely recommend visiting the museum to everyone.

This is the Smithsonian’s newest and by far most popular museum in DC on the National Mall. It is so coveted that it’s the only Smithsonian museum where visitors must either pre-register online for a time slot or wait in line to hopefully get a walk-in ticket. It’s no wonder this museum is the most popular one amongst dozens nearby; the cultural significance and location of this long overdue museum is important for the advancement of the USA’s collective morals and values. Beyond the cultural and societal aspects, the museum’s external architecture and internal curation are exemplary, so it’s easy to see why so many people want to experience this already classic attraction.

Like the Air and Space Museum, the Natural History Museum is one of the neatest Smithsonian Institution museums in DC. The lovely thing about most of these Smithsonian museums is that they are all, for the most part, within walking distance from one another. The Natural History Museum has always been a favorite for visitors due to the diversity of exhibits and attractions. Real, excavated dinosaur bones in one hall, the actual hope diamond and other priceless historical jewelry in another hall, and interactive games, displays, rides, exhibits, etc. in a third. Rest assured, the museum is expansive and contains well over three halls/areas with exhibits. I would say this is the best museum for families with children to visit because it has something for everyone in the family to be awestruck by, regardless of age.

Another incredible, free-to-enter, art museum that is particularly interesting because it’s where the Smithsonian displays exhibits of modern artwork. Like the Renwick Gallery, the Hirshhorn Museum is on a rotating schedule of exhibits by modern and contemporary artists from all over the world. Probably the most well-known exhibit that was housed there relatively recently was Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama’s modern art series. It had some beautiful pieces, sculptures, interactive canvasses, and entire rooms with her art and artistic influence. On any given day, however, one can expect to be thoroughly entranced by the sometimes strange, yet always beautiful, art exhibits on display at the Hirshhorn.

The tip of the tallest steeple being the highest point in the District of Columbia, this magnificent structure can be seen from almost anywhere in DC and is wondrous to visit, regardless of religious denomination. With its classical and gothic architecture, this structure is truly notable for the beautiful intricacies that make up the exterior and interior of the church. Now I’m not exactly sure how the visitation schedules work for the cathedral, but I know it’s mostly open to the public during the weekdays. Check the cathedral’s website for more information about it!

Not sure why it is being labeled as a library, but getting into the White House is only accessible through tours, which can be registered for online. However, if visitors would like to see the president’s residence from the outside, then it’s an easy walk down Pennsylvania Avenue NW between 15th St. NW and 17th St. NW. There, parties can take pictures with the White House in the backdrop and scream obscenities at, or praises for, Trump through the fence!

Old Town Alexandria is a 10 minute bus ride from my place that boasts beautiful waterfront views, myriad restaurants and eateries, and shopping for everyone. The main thoroughfare - King St. - is a lovely walk down to the Potomac waterfront with the bulk of the storefronts along its cobbled sidewalks. Free trolleys run every 5-10 minutes from the King St. Metro Station down King St. to the waterfront, as well.

Local spots!

These are spots within walking distance of my house!
Reynolds Street Bar and Grill is walking distance from my house and a great place to grab a bite or a beer for guests looking for a quite place to hang out! That bar has been there for as long as I can remember, and while I don’t visit it as much as I should, I’m always greeted fondly and remembered by the staff! Multiple TVs line their walls, and they are always playing sports, so guests can easily catch a game down there!

Shooter McGee’s is a cozy, welcoming bar nearby my place (Reynolds St. Bar and Grill is closer, so I would recommend there if walking will be an issue) that offers food and a place to grab a beer, as well as sit down options. While they don’t have nearly as many TV screens as Reynolds St. Bar and Grill, their food is delicious and staff friendly!
