In my opinion, Suba's is the best, and only worth-while dining experience in Mountain City. Known for their friendly atmosphere and outstanding food, with two professionally trained chefs, LuAnne and Rich Suba. Their menu ranges from perfectly prepared steaks, the best seafood in the area, pastas and chicken to wonderful lunch sandwiches and salads. Pastry chef LuAnne is known far and wide for desserts that cannot be matched. MAKE SURE THEY ARE OPEN before you drive out there (dinner served Wed-Sat). http://www.subasrestaurant.com/

This is probably the most popular, and arguably the most spectacular, waterfall in northeast Tennessee. But it's not necessarily the easiest to get to. The most popular route is to hike in from the top. It is a beautiful 1.2 mile trail that is level for much of the way with the first part actually following an old railroad bed. But the last quarter mile goes straight down. They've done a great job putting in stone steps all the way to the bottom, but it's still a difficult descent and a strenuous hike going back up. http://appalachiantreks.blogspot.com/2007/07/laurel-falls.html

Even though the picnic area at Watauga Point is closed for the winter, there's a little known trail that gives visitors beautiful views of the lake. This short (only 0.4 mi long), easy, looped trail begins at the overflow parking lot at Watauga Point and is accessible year round. Half-way through the hike, there's an open, beach-like area -- the perfect place to take the dog for a swim. Directions: Take 19E to Hampton, TN, turn east on Highway 321/67 going toward Mountain City. Travel approximately 6 miles, turn left into Watauga Point Recreation Area, park in the overflow lot to your right, trailhead is clearly marked.

Cautionary Note: This trail is extremely challenging, with as many as 18 stream crossings (at the height of the winter thaw), a 1,200-foot elevation change and many opportunities to lose the trail. There are also no facilities (such as drinking water) on or near the trail. The Devil's Fork Loop Trail provides an impressively beautiful route through an old-growth hemlock and rhododendron forest. Amazing rock formations, waterfalls, swimming holes and mountain views give you plenty to see and do, but keep one eye on the trail, as the going can be rough. Although the trail follows yellow blazes for its entire 7 miles, poor maintenance means it is often difficult to find the blazes and the path, which, in several places, scrambles over large rocks or up very steep cliff faces. http://www.traillink.com/trail/devils-fork-loop-trail.aspx
